A number of people are extremely bugged by internet slang in posts and/or on multiplayer. I myself do not use it unless I am on MSN or a similar chatting system, however I was wondering what the response would be about it. Why do you/don't you like internet slang? Do you think it is a big deal? Does internet slang have to do with ignorance, laziness, or age? Let me know of your opinions. |

In posts I don't see why it's a big deal (assuming you mean posts to the Bioware Boards). This IS the internet after all. But in-game I can see how people have a problem with it being out-of-character, especially on role playing servers. _________________ http://www.kragmoor.com |

I only use it for really simple/obvious shortcuts like u for you (u'r, u're etc). Thats actually the only one I can think of which I use.
anything that might be ambigous or overblown (e.g. 133t ) I don't use. _________________ Information Junkie |

Why, don't your 'Y' or 'O' keys work?
Personally, I see no need to shorten words when typing on forums. This isn't IRC, no-one is timing you, there's no rush.
I won't not help someone if they use shortenings such as those is they ask for help on forums, but it doesn't make me any fonder of them.
Oh, and before you ask, I'm 17. So no, I'm not some old git. I just take my time to type properly. _________________ "Dirk Gently, hired by someone he never meets, to do a job that is never specified, starts following people at random" - Douglas Adams |

I think Internet slang can be usefull in certain cases, in order to to express something more quickly. For instance in games, chats etc.
In my opinion (no i'm not goint to write "imho" ) there is no need for it in a forum. Simply because you usually have enough time to write a proper text and I personally prefer to read entire words.
Of course there are some exceptions, such as "ur" etc. |

some people (e.g. me) don't want to spend ages spellchecking their posts or re-editing them for spelling mistakes. U is only one letter to get wrong instead of 3, & when ur making a point spelling isn't always the most important (as long as it's legible).
I've seen a lot of people post stuff, then other people respond to those posts with "you're completely illegible" or "your post makes no sense". I've found them quite legible (most use full words) & am somewhat bemused as to why it's so difficult for some people to read when they're using, at worst, a form of slang that everyone understands (you = u).
why I don't use Y & O in you, is just a good a question as why americans don't use U in colour _________________ Information Junkie |

Age is probably correlated with usage of internet slang, since those who grew up with IM are more likely to use it. You also find some older people who use it, possibly to try to appear young/hip; I have a friend who's in his mid-30's and hangs out with college students, and his online conversation is generally along the lines of, "u r kewl LOL!!!11" Then there's me, a 22-year-old who uses semicolons on AIM and finds much 133t-speak physically painful to read. (What exactly does 133t mean, anyway?)
On a forum like this, I tend to agree with Kel-Nage; there's no limit on time or space, so why not type out the entire word? |

133t -> lEEt -> shortened, mangled, bastardized form of "elite" |

I hate 1337 speak and get annoyed very quickly with shortcuts like "ur" (didn't that used to be a country?), numbers for words (im 2 uber 4 u lolz), and certain other abbreviations outside of certain cases. I don't care if you use lol, nvm, idk, or imo in moderation. Personally, I only ever abbreviate in chat (aside from the occasional IIRC or LOL in forums) in rare circumstances, and even then I only use lol or tho (for though).
The main problem I have with abbreviations and slang (aside from the obvious association with power-tripping 12 year olds) is that it is incredibly inconsiderate to non-native speakers of English. It's hard enough to take part in a forum where nearly everyone else speaks an unfamiliar tongue without having to worry about incomprehensable strings of vowels and consonants that don't appear in any translation dictionaries or follow any of the spelling/grammar rules that you learned.
Case in point: a Brazilian friend of mine invited a 13 year old he met online to the English-language forums of the mod he ran. Neither he nor his fellow brazilias could understand a thing he was typing. It isn't even that he didn't understand English well, it just never really registered with him. _________________ Ussta Quarval-sharess! Well, I wanted to say the same thing. I'm not a native speaker, and though these abbreviations are known and used here, too, I don't like them. I only use these 1337-things when I want to make fun of somebody (but they don't get it in most cases...). But sometimes there are posts on this board I don't even understand because of this abbreviation. That's the time I ask myself if their or mine english is too bad. But it's a thing we have to deal with. Sure, I use things like cu, but only in games or chats. Not in boards. And I still have the time to press shift long enough so that I can use three ! in a row, not !1!. |

OMGWTF im t3h c00lz0r!!!!!1111oneoneeleven
A big waste of time. I can live with abbreviations (sorry for spelling mistakes), but changing numbers for letters, adding 'z0r' at the end of words and typing 'teh' on purpose is a big waste of time. It doesn't even save time, it just takes longer to type, and if people can read it, it gives them headache. |

For forums, I'll occasionally use FWIW, IMHO, or YMMV (for what its worth, In my humble opinion, your mileage may vary ). I feel I can use these preceding or following a full complete sentence, and the point will still get across either way.
lol is different. If someone says something funny, you can either say lol, do the face, or write out some variant of "That is some hilarious stuff you said", "you crack me up", " I am laughing right now", etc. The problem is that the first 2 seem to be universally accepted, but the sentence may sometimes seem sarcastic or smarmy.
People who do anything else only manage to get on my nerve. For quick chat in First Person Shooter multiplayer games I'll forgive it, but on forums they only manage to make themselves look like 12 year olds. |

Well, if anyone is using these abbreviations to cut down on the time they need to write it, then whatever they have to say is not worth the time to write in full, so it can't be worth my time to try and decipher it. |

I myself am not a fan of abbreviations and 1337. In my opinon, it's probably one of the worst things invented. It makes it even worse when you're at a lan place (cyber cafe) and people that play CS for a living yell out things like "BL" or "ROFL". I feel sorry for those people. What's wrong with taking the time to type a sentence without shortening words, I haven't a clue. Typing in full blown sentences improves your typing skills, and you'll learn that you type much faster without having to reach your fingers to the shift button and numerical keys.
The only time anyone would catch me using 1337 is when I take the piss out of the people that use it. E.g. "OMGWTFLOLROFL!!!!!112!!2213onehundredandtwentytwo" _________________ "I get paid a lot of money to kill people and make it look like an accident, and you're coming very close to having an accident." - Kite |

Leet is just plain irritating to me; but others use it happily. I use shortened forms such as lol or for example "hlp..." since multiplayer is still time restricted. You folks that don't agree: Try this sometime. Go fight a dragon with a lvl18 non-twinked sorcerer equipped with no better than +2 robes non-perma-hasted and see how fast you can type to other party members.
The (badly made) point is that some folks get into a habit; bad as the habit may be; from the very nature of the game. Unless you play some wierd multiplayer mod that has no combat at all; and you all are new to the game?Edited By Khandahr on 11/29/04 11:04 |
