Hey, I'm fairly new to NWN, and I've been told that the order you take your levels pre-epic has hugely influence your BAB. Could someone please explain to me how to work out BAB? |

Before you hit 21 this is how BAB looks for...
Fighter-Types -> +1 BAB every level for a total of 20 at level 20
Rogue/Cleric-Types -> +3 BAB every 4 levels for a total of 15 at level 20
*Note: You gain BAB in the form of (0, 1, 2, 3, 3, 4...), you don't gain BAB if your (level - 1) % 4 = 0.
Magey-Types -> +1 every 2 levels for a total of 10 at level 20
Starting with level 21, you gain 1 BAB every odd level regardless of class.
Also your BAB influences your number of attacks.
1-5 = 1 attack per round 6-10 = 2 attacks per round 11-15 = 3 attacks per round 16-20 = 4 attacks per round
However, this is only true before you hit level 20, once you hit level 20... your number of attacks is frozen in place regardless of your BAB. _________________ When I am working on a problem I never think about beauty. Not the order, but the number of levels (if you multi-class with a class that does not get the 1:1 BAB progression)
There are 3 progressions:
1:1 = they get +1 BAB every level. Classes with this progression are: FTR, Barbarian, Ranger, Paladin, Aracane Archer, Weapon Master, Blackguard, Champion of Torm, Dwarven Defender
3:4 = they get +3 BAB every 4 levels. The first level in each series of four gets 0 BAB, then +1 each level in the series after that. So, the progression goes like this:
lvl 1 = +0 BAB lvl 2 = +1 BAB lvl 3 = +2 BAB lvl 4 = +3 BAB lvl 5 = +3 BAB (new series of 4 begins, so no additional BAB at this level) lvl 6 = +4 BAB lvl 7 = +5 BAB lvl 8 = +6 BAB lvl 9 = +6 BAB (another new series of 4) lvl 10 = +7 BAB etc...
Classes with the 3:4 BAB progression are: Druid, Monk, Bard, Rogue, Red Dragon Disciple, Shifter, Cleric, Assassin, Shadowdancer, Harper Scout
The final progression is a 1:2 which gains +1 BAB every second level. Classes in this category are Wizard, Sorcerer, and Pale Master.
The key with all this is, if you want to get as many attacks per round as possible, you must try to get +16 BAB by level 20 (where your attacks per round are capped)
It doesn't matter when you take the levels, but it does matter how many you take in the lower BAB progression classes. An example:
A level 20 character with FTR and Rogue:
Example 1: 16 Rogue/4 FTR BAB = +16 and 4 attacks per round (16 Rogue is +12 BAB and 4 FTR is +4 BAB for a total of +16 BAB)
Now imagine you wanted to squeeze another Rogue level in there to get that extra 1d6 sneak attack, so you go 17 Rogue/3 FTR. You'd end up with BAB +15 and only 3 attacks per round. (17 Rogue = +12 BAB and 3 FTR is +3 BAB for +15 total)
One of the regulars on here (Blue Emu) has a very good way to figure out how your BAB is doing. Instead of trying to keep track of what you're gaining, keep track of what you're losing.
In the second example above, start yourself with +20 BAB (maximum BAB at level 20). 3 FTR levels loses no BAB, so no problem. But 17 Rogue levels loses 5 BAB (at Rogue levels 1, 5, 9, 13, and 17). So that drops your BAB to +15 and you lose an attack. That's the importance of your BAB progressions.
Hope that's not too confusing. _________________ It's rogue, dammit, ROGUE!!! |

Page 179 of the Original NWN manual actually has the single class BAB's for the original characters to look at for reference if you ever want a quick glimpse of what the progressions look like from 1 to 20.

Wow, thank you all very much for your help!
I can't really use my manual, as you don't get a manual with the English Deluxe edition, just the .pdf file which I don't like. |

How to work out Bab? Sure, I think I can help out here.
Bab's a little heavy in the caboose, so I like to take her down to the 24 Hour Fitness center and start her off with about 15 minutes on the elliptical machine.
Then I have her do some butt exercises with an exercise ball, followed by 10 minutes of lunges, 15 minutes of stairmaster, and then (just because I'm a sadist) I have her to wind sprints for 10 minutes. Or until she upchucks.
I figure in 4-6 weeks we'll have her down 12-15 pounds and fitting back into her old jeans. Bab is gonna love us!
Let me know if this isn't what you were looking for. Thanks, Kaliban _________________ Check out the Epic Character Builders Guild Click Here Test your new builds in this mod: Click Here |
