I've seen a lot of people asking about how Base Attack Bonus and number of attacks are calculated and I think that, rather than reiterate it in every single thread, it may be smarter to just to have one big thread to answer all the questions... so here goes.
Before Level 20
There are three Base Attack Bonus Progressions: 1:1, 3:4, and 1:2.
The first Base Attack Bonus Progression (1:1) is used by the Fighter type characters.
- Barbarian
- Fighter
- Paladin
- Ranger
- Arcane Archer
- Black Guard
- Champion of Torm
- Dwarven Defender
- Weapon Master
For every level, you gain 1 to your Base Attack Bonus.
- 1
- 2
- 3
- 4
- 5
- 6/1 <-- 2 Attacks per round
- 7/2
- 8/3
- 9/4
- 10/5
- 11/6/1 <-- 3 Attacks per round
- 12/7/2
- 13/8/3
- 14/9/4
- 15/10/5
- 16/11/6/1 <-- 4 Attacks per round
- 17/12/7/2
- 18/13/8/3
- 19/14/9/4
- 20/15/10/5
The next Base Attack Progression (3:4) is used with the non-Mage, but non-Fighter type characters.
- Bard
- Cleric
- Druid
- Monk
- Rogue
- Assassin
- Harper Scout
- Red Dragon Disciple
- Shifter
- Shadow Dancer
For every 4 levels, you gain 3 to your Base Attack Bonus.
- 0 <-- No gain here
- 1
- 2
- 3
- 3 <-- No gain here
- 4
- 5
- 6/1 <-- 2 Attacks per round
- 6/1 <-- No gain here
- 7/2
- 8/3
- 9/4
- 9/4 <-- No gain here
- 10/5
- 11/6/1 <-- 3 Attacks per round
- 12/7/2
- 12/7/2 <-- No gain here
- 13/8/3
- 14/9/4
- 15/10/5
The next Base Attack Progression (1:2) is used with the Mage-type characters.
- Wizard
- Sorceress
- Pale Master
For every 2 levels, you gain 1 to your Base Attack Bonus.
- 0 <-- No gain here
- 1
- 1 <-- No gain here
- 2
- 2 <-- No gain here
- 3
- 3 <-- No gain here
- 4
- 4 <-- No gain here
- 5
- 5 <-- No gain here
- 6/1 <-- 2 Attacks per round
- 6/1 <-- No gain here
- 7/2
- 7/2 <-- No gain here
- 8/3
- 8/3 <-- No gain here
- 9/4
- 9/4 <-- No gain here
- 10/5
Now, if you have a multiclass character...
say for example: Ranger 6 and Rogue 14
Just look up the Base Attack Bonus of the one with the lowest progression, in this case, Rogue and find its Base Attack Bonus (10/5). Now find that same Base Attack Bonus (10/5) on the next progression up (Fighter BAB) and add the 6 Ranger levels. This gives you 16/11/6/1 for the Base Attack Bonus.
Alternatively, you can look up how much BAB each class loses. The 6 levels of Ranger have no losses. The 14 levels of Rogue however, have 4 losses. Add up their total levels (20 in this case) and subtract 4 from the Fighter BAB Progression and you get 16/11/6/1 as well.
After Level 20
After level 20, your Base Attack Bonus acts like it were that of a Mage-type and you are unable to gain new attacks regardless of your Base Attack Bonus. This means that if you want 4 attacks per round, you have to get them before level 21. This causes some people to put off Mage classes until post epic if they can to maximize their number of attacks.
Here's what the progression looks like for all classes during levels 21 through 40.
21. +1 -> 1 22. +0 -> 1 <-- No gain here 23. +1 -> 2 24. +0 -> 2 <-- No gain here 25. +1 -> 3 26. +0 -> 3 <-- No gain here 27. +1 -> 4 28. +0 -> 4 <-- No gain here 29. +1 -> 5 30. +0 -> 5 <-- No gain here 31. +1 -> 6 32. +0 -> 6 <-- No gain here 33. +1 -> 7 34. +0 -> 7 <-- No gain here 35. +1 -> 8 36. +0 -> 8 <-- No gain here 37. +1 -> 9 38. +0 -> 9 <-- No gain here 39. +1 -> 10 40. +0 -> 10 <-- No gain here
If you wish to calculate your Base Attack Bonus here, all you have to do is look up your level and add the right number to what your Base Attack Bonus was at level 20.
I hope this helps all the new people that are confused about how Base Attack Bonuses work.

My dear, I hope you can still edit, as you may end up confusing the noobs.
A Rogue of level 14 has a BAB of +10/+5... _________________ It's rogue, dammit, ROGUE!!! |

I missed that...
I was too busy trying to figure out why the bulleted lists were giving me list incompletes.
I wish that little mis-typing could be fixed... it's such a good list of everything too...

sometimes, wishes come true.
my suggested way of working out bab for multiclass characters is just to work out the bab for each class individually, and add it up.
if you know the "-5 per extra attack" rule, then you can figure out the number of extra attacks pretty easily. |

sometimes, wishes come true.
But, alas, in real life - just as in D&D - wishes generally don't turn out exactly as we'd hoped :
