Well you've got the right idea, you have to kill the creatures first...can't really say how to specifically not die in the process you've just kinda have to experament with different tactics and use your class abilites as well as you can... |

That's right, the little boy (with an adult's voice!) in the basement will sell you lots of stuff, including a Bag of Holding (I love those).
Have you tried luring the low-level minions out of the room (and killing them at least 60 feet - shout distance - away from Desther) BEFORE you touch any of the Ritual Zombies? I find that Desther is usually pretty wrapped up un his own concerns until you interfere with the Ritual. In fact, it usually isn't until I whack the SECOND Ritual Zombie, that he reacts to my interference.
Another REALLY cheezy trick is to summon an undead helper (if your character is capable of that) because stupid Desther will use his Turn Undead ability... destroying or turning all of his OWN minions in the process... like I said, this is pretty cheezy.
My best suggestion, though, is to go down to the basement and buy a whack of buffing potions (Bull's Strength, Endurance, Bless, Speed... whatever he carries) and chug them all down just before you tackle Desther. Clean out the undead minions (except for the Ritual Zombies) first, if you can... then Buff up and tackle the Big Guy.
What class/level/spells/feats etc do you have? What tactics have you been using? Desther never gave me any particular problems... _________________ -Blue Emu

I've tried to kill the "easy" monsters first, but desther attacked me anyway, and as i said i've tried to kill the ritual creatures first. I'm a level 7 fighter, but i ecsactly whitch skills/feats i have. I think that one of the reasons that Desther attacks even if i dont attack the ritual creatures might be that i've downloaded the henchman AI mod which makes the monsters smarter, and as i've typed in another topic i dont know how to uninstall the mod Edited By farmer_ted on 08/08/04 16:36 |

I just used 1 Potion of Speed and I hacked every monster in there to pieces, that was the fastest boss fight I think I ever had in NWN.
Maybe you could use some of the other potions that you can find on Meldanen or other people. And if you teleport back to the temple you can just click the rest button and that will heal you to full health too. Good Luck! |

What class/level are you? Do you have Set Traps skill (Rogues and Rangers)? Stealth capability (Rogues, Rangers, Monks etc)? Turn Undead (Clerics and Paladins)? Are you a spellcasting class?
It's hard to offer constructive advice knowing so little about your character... Have you tried setting the difficulty slider down to it's easiest setting for this one encounter? _________________ -Blue Emu

As other people said, go buy potions from that kid in the basement. You can also take Linu with you (she can turn undead) I never took her in there myself though ... so I can't guarantee succes. Maybe other people can give more info about that. You could also take Dealan with you. A strong fighter duo might also work . |

Boy, level 7 seems pretty low for 1E (Helm's Hold), I'm usually level 8 or more by this point... you must have skipped a bunch of the optional side-quests or something.
I just finished loading 1E into the toolkit and examining the C-language scripts... looking for one that might just bypass the fight and start the next module. I found one that would work, but unfortunately it has to be run BY the module (not from the console) so I couldn't find a way to get it to work.
I also checked out 'Johny', the little kid in the basement... he does indeed sell potions (Bless, Aid, Speed and Heal). Have you got enough Gold to stock up? With enough Heal potions NOTHING can beat you, but they are about 2 grand each.
There's always the ##dm_giveXP 10000 command... hate to use console cheats, though, until all other alternatives are exhausted. Do you want to just CHEAT your way past it? Or try getting some potions from little Johny and tackling Big D again? A few Speed potions and a couple of Heals might be all you need... _________________ -Blue Emu

If it's a cheat you want, what's wrong with good old fashioned dm_god? At least you get to beat on him.
BTW, you're thread title is correct, you can't kill Desther. He will surrender about the time he goes to injured, though.

edit: Level 7 for a fighter is about right, they (along with barbs, rangers, and pallys) level very s l o w l y in the first chapter compared to most of the other classes.Edited By Rondoalla on 08/08/04 18:02 |

If he's gonna use god-mode, better tell him how to turn it off when he's done... the campaign could get pretty boring going through the whole thing in god-mode. _________________ -Blue Emu

Just click into the chat box at the bottom of the screen, and type ##dm_god and press <enter>.
Same to turn it off.
Did you try the potions first? Speed and Heal might be all you need to beat this guy.
PS: if the god mode command doesn't work, you might first have to type ##debugmode 1 or it might be ##DebugMode 1
To turn Debug mode off, use a zero instead of a one. _________________ -Blue Emu
