For full information about this system and the work done to create it, check out here: The Art of War
In three minutes you can download & install it and have entire armies of mixed race soldiers raining arrows, spells, swords, and catapult thrown fireballs down on enemy armies, without having any custom creatures, and controlled by any combination of players, or dms, or dm possessed creatures in your module.
You want Braveheart and the Fellowship of the Ring in NwNights? this can do it.
Any and all feedback is appreciated.

Hey Genji, the link you posted doesn't work. Are you putting this up on NW Vault? _________________ The Sunken Cemetery (Remake for NWN2) |

Yeah, type-o, should be The Art of War, and it should be up in the vault now too.
Thanks Niah.

A question: The Final Beta and 1.0 were released almost on top of each other. Are there fixes in 1.0 that aren't in the Final Beta, or was the Final Beta the 'release candidate' that was dubbed 1.0?
For anyone who wasn't in the beta thread, I want to say I really recommend this. First, you can do fighting on a scale that you can't either in Neverwinter Nights or in pen and paper. Second, this is really good code to look at if you want to learn to write scripts with behavior involving several characters.
Plus, I'd like to remind you that you can edit the link in the first post. Being able to edit text you've already created is about my favorite feature of the Bioware Bulletin Boards. I've crowbarred my foot out of my mouth a couple times . _________________ Bat Taunt Skill -4 "Did you lose your grip on the cave roof when you were a baby?" "You'd better be omniverous. I have it! Now I'll have to play around with it a little when I get home. On a side note: it's really amazing to see some of the things people are doing with the scripting language. There's a demo module up that allows writing messages with flames. There's also another that allows you to make realistic force cages and barriers. _________________ The Sunken Cemetery (Remake for NWN2) |

Sam, There are a couple minor bug fixes, like the marshal not starting the first conversation with you, but the final beta is mostly the same as 1.0.

Hey, I've got my first draft of a tutorial for Genji's Art of War. It's a good, easy place to learn how to lead troops of your own. I would really appreciate feedback, especially from people who haven't previously used Genji's Art of War.
My module is available here. You can either send me messages on this site or email at samjones@io.com
I'll post here again with later versions.

Thanks for pointing me here Genji & Sam.
I hesitate to send you my module for two reasons: 1) It's designed to be closely DM'd - I haven't automated much of it. 2) I'm still taking my players through it, and I wouldn't want one of them to stumble upon it and ruin the fun! (Let's hope they're not reading this )
Really though, it's not going to be much more useful than the demo module. I have a bunch of orcs in a stockade (who are neutral to the PCs at the start). When the PCs pay the Orcs a visit, they see the Orc leader doing drill-practice with a small unit of Orcs. I might also allow them to see some mixed unit combat practice (using Orc Archers & Warrirors against the stolen cows from the little hamlet the PCs are defending).
There might also be an opportunity to encounter a patrol of these neutral (but strangely disciplined) orcs while en route between major points of interest. If the PCs spot them in time and hide&watch they might be both impressed and scared at the implications of orcs marching in step.
Later in the game there will be some real unit-level combat, when the PCs are given a small detachment of troops to command against the invading forces from the north.
For now though I don't have much to show you, unless you're interested in seeing the AOW imported into a module and a bunch of orcs standing around

I know this system is much better off as a DM tool, so enjoy and if your players have any ideas, please have them post up, once you are finished of course. Thanks.

Oh looks down, embarrassed I guess I forgot something.
There is now a zipped version of the tutorial module I just posted here.
One of the lessons (arguably two) involves violence that could be pretty disturbing. The honest truth is that I got the idea to do this after reading about Jerry Springer's show on videogame violence. I'm interested in the opinions of people who played the tutorial and found it genuinely unpleasant or distracting.
Sheesh, the edit option doesn't last every long, does it?

I am pleased to relay the following from the 1.25 Beta patch release notes released Sept 26th:
- Added "/tk" and "/talk" to the chat command list.
This is great news, and assuming it works like we want it to, removes the last hurdle in the way of real player vs player gaming. What I hope is the case is that it has whisper's range and is heard by npc's. If that is the case, then we are golden.

This seems neat! Has anyone used it lately, esp with the new 1.27 patch? The website hasn't been updated in months, so I was wondering if there was something broken in it... _________________ Say hi at my MySpace space __ CoPaP: linking worlds together, BOTD PvP team warefare! |

Hello All, thanksgiving has given me a chance to check up on some nwn. As for the art of war, since 1.25 when it was last written there has not been anything new in patches that would change anything about the code base. When they give us some more functionallity i'll release new versions that utilize them. The advent of talk as the default 'shout' function made it easy to have player vs player fights, but that didn't effect the code in any way. I've been keeping track of what 1.27 has to offer, and besides rats in formation (like i won't try that...), there's nothing new script-wise that will effect the aow.
As for myself, I've been barely able to do requests since october, but christmas should offer me some more time. I have been working on a module with a friend, so look for that in the future.

Ah this is now the active thread cool. I have a problem, how can you get the guys to STOP marching? They ignore me completly, marching into walls, or to the end of the areas. |
