An important element of urban decay will soon be added to Neverwinter's muck encrusted sewers and corpse strewn back alleys - big, bloated rats! The upcoming 1.27 patch will include 2 new rat creatures. The Rats profile has the details, and a new screenshot shows these vermin in action!

Actually, I was a bit surprised when I ran an informal survey about what sorts of creatures people would like to see and Rats were far and away more popular than nearly everything but...Kobolds. Interesting. So we made some rats for folks. They really do look cool running around however. They add a huge amount to any scene to gritty it up a bunch. I wanted monkeys myself but <sniff> I ain't got no power man...

Rats... Not nearly as flashy as some of the other monsters, but still definately very useful for modules. Nothing says slumtown like a swarm of rats

Yay for rats. What's really hard is coming up with new challenges for the lower level players. Rats do a lot to add to that. Also they add to the feel of a place, and with the various forms of spawn code available from the community it's not hard to make them swarm all over players. Great work!

Excellent!

Now, is there any chance that rats will be allowed as familiars soon?

It is awesome to see rats... I don't care what anyone says.

Of course if you need some signatures for a petition for monkeys (and dire monkeys ) count me in! Of course if you have monkeys you need to add playable instruments (including the accordian) for bards to play and have the monkeys running around begging for/stealing coins.

Seriously though... Is Bioware doing anything to make the fan created content more official (ie, contacting the developer for permission, testing, and then including the tilesets, placeables, creatures, etc. in an officially supported patch)?

Rock on,
--Jeff

PS... Owl, eagles, Water-only creatures (mermen or sahuagin sticking half out of the water and attack when players get close, etc.) would all be cool. Gnolls, snakes, oozes, slimes, and jellies would all be great too.

I'm glad that rats finally became official. They look great.

However, I am also worried about what the fans who already spent time and effort making rat models think about all this. Perhaps (just an idea) Bioware can ask people who already created custom content if they could make their content official. Just a though.

Anyway... monkeys with accordians. That's my dream. Ahhh..

One need only read that brief writeup on our furry friends to know exactly why Bioware kicks so much ass.

You guys have GOT to try doing a humorous RPG sometime. C'mon! There's gotta be a market for it from all the Lucasarts fanboys dying for a fix... hmm, or maybe I could start my own company...

That's great, BioGuys! Now I can replace the giant rats I was using (made by combining the Boar appearance with the Bat sound set) with yours. And then, to create Vorpal Rats. Bwa ha ha
