[Edit: A new version of the Mac NWN FAQ is available here.]
Greetings:
As per the suggestion from bcantrell, here is the brand new Neverwinter Nights Mac FAQ.
1. Is the NWN Aurora Toolset coming out for the Mac version of Neverwinter Nights?
No. Our initial goal was to create a cross platform toolset for the gaming community. However, we have encountered difficulty in obtaining a viable cross-platform solution to assist us in porting the Aurora Neverwinter Toolset. As such, BioWare has no plans to create Mac or Linux versions of the Aurora Neverwinter Toolset at this time.
2. Will Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide be coming out for Mac?
This decision has not been made yet and is up to our publishing partner, MacSoft.
3. When is the Mac version of Neverwinter Nights coming out?
Its out right now!
4. Will the DM Client be included with the Mac version?
Yes. The DM Client is based off of the main NWN executable for all platforms, so there is a Mac DM Client.
5. Will the Mac version be able to play as a NWN client or as a DM in multiplayer sessions with PC or Linux players?
Yes. All platforms can play together provided they are all running the same version number of Neverwinter Nights.
6. Will the Mac version be able to connect to PC or Linux game servers?
Yes. All platforms can play together provided they are all running the same version number of Neverwinter Nights.
7. Can I download and play Hak Paks and modules created on a PC?
Yes. All the data files for Neverwinter Nights are cross-platform and work on Windows, Linux, and Mac.
8. What is this that I hear about a Mac Tech Trial?
The Tech Trial was a great success! Its over now since the game is available in stores. Thanks to all that participated!
9. Will there be a public Beta of the Mac version of NWN?
There are no plans for a public Beta at this time.
10. Will the Neverwinter Nights Dedicated Server be included?
Yes nwserver is included as part of the Mac version of NWN. It will be a GUI app like the Windows version. There are no plans at this time to do a console version of the Mac dedicated server.
11. Will the Windows, Mac, and Linux Updates be released at the same time?
For the most part, yes. We don't forsee anything that would prevent the Updates to all be released within 24 hours of each other, but we aren't willing to make statements in absolutes about this subject quite yet. You never know when the ninjas might attack again...
12. Can I run Mac NWN in a window as opposed to full-screen?
Yes.
13. I already own a copy of NWN, would all I need is the executable file and the game resorces to play NWN for Mac when it becomes available?
[ripped right from RDesrosiers]The Mac publisher (MacSoft) gets no money if you use the resources of the PC version of NWN and use them with a freely available Mac executable. So you will need to purchase the Mac version of NWN in order to get the Mac executable and that will have the same game resources as the Windows version.
14. The PC version of NWN relies quite a bit on the right-click. How will this be handled in the Mac version for one-button mice?
Option+Click is the Mac version of Windows right-click in NWN. Or, in the immortal words of John Carmack "Get a real mouse."
15. How do I display my frame rate (fps) in Neverwinter Nights (this includes the Tech Trial)?
In the game, press the ~ key. This will bring up the console and then type trace fps and press Enter. The framerate will then be displayed in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Alternatively you can type 'fps' in the console and it will display your framerate at the exact second of the query.
16. How do I get Windowed mode to work in Neverwinter Nights?
You will need to edit the nwn.ini file.
First add the following line to the [Display Options] section:
AllowWindowedMode=1
Secondly, change the line that says
Fullscreen=1
to
Fullscreen=0
17. I bought the game for my Mac over a year ago because I was told all three versions were coming in the same box. What are you going to do to either compensate me or allow me to trade in my PC version?
This issue was clarified over a year ago. Sorry, but there is nothing we can do for you. You should have returned the game the moment you received it when you found out that you didn't get what you paid for from the retailer that you purchased it from. Neither can we, as the developer, do any sort of exchange for your current version (published by Atari) for a Mac version (published by MacSoft).
18. What is the minimum version of the Mac OS required to run Mac NWN?
10.2.6
19. When will Mac NWN be available outside of North America?
BioWare is not able to answer this question at this time.
20. Does Mac NWN support multiple CPUs?
No. Neverwinter Nights doesn't support multiple CPUs on any platform.
21. What version of NWN is shipping in the Mac version?
1.30
Please feel free to make suggestions for new questions and comments on the specific FAQ items, but please note that we will be culling those posts once the issue has been addressed. If you want to discuss a particular FAQ item in more detail, please create a new thread here in the Neverwinter Nights Mac Forum. _________________ Derek French Technical Producer Live TeamEdited By Llandru on 02/11/04 01:59 |

Q: Will the Mac NWUpdater be skinnable? Will it be compatible with PC skins?
Q: Will a hak-pak editing tool be included with the Mac version? (This might be an OK thing, but since there is a tool included with the PC version, I thought to ask the question so people don't get the wrong idear.) Both of the above are in the same realm as the Toolset in terms of programming development, so we don't have any resources allocated to develop them at this time.
Quote: Q: Will Mac NWN users be visually distinctive somehow in our forums posts? In our profiles? We are right in the middle of discussing this exact thing right now, as it applies to far more than just Mac users. _________________ Derek French Technical Producer Live Team |

Back on topic: New FAQ question....
Q: Mac NWN: Carbon or Cocoa? Or some strange mixture of both?
A: Carbon doesn't mean that an application is automatically usable in OS 9, but Cocoa means that an application can *only* be used in Mac OS X. I'm assuming tha Mac NWN is a mixture of Carbon and Cocoa, since it was started as a Mac OS 9 application and then when Apple announced that Mac OS 9 was dead, BioWare had to completely re-design the Mac version to run on Mac OS X. Actually, maybe you'd better answer this, because I have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about. (I would love to hear techy details about the internals of Mac NWN development, though.)
Thanks, Derek. _________________ I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, Livin’ in the hopeless, hungry side of town, I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, But is there because he’s a victim of the times. Johnny Cash (1932–2003), “Man In Black” |

Sorry guys, I was away for a while, then got back right into Mac NWN crunch, so it will still be a few more days before I can get this thread all sorted out. _________________ Derek French Technical Producer Live Team |

Will it be possible to import PC saved games ? I've played with the PC version, and I'd like to continue playing on the Mac version with my laptop... We haven't tried it, but it should work. All the data files are cross-platform. _________________ Derek French Technical Producer Live Team |

Quote: Posted 08/07/03 19:39:13 (GMT) by Destin_ I realize that is an old question, but could you elucidate on what exactly is not going to be getting development resources? The updater itself or making it skinnable. I'm sensing there is not going to be an NWN:Mac updater (I've started another thread about this, too). I answered this just today in another thread...
You will get the Main and DM clients, and the dedicated server. There won't be a Mac Updater program. We don't have a final decision on what else will be ported over at this time. _________________ Derek French Technical Producer Live TeamEdited By Derek French on 08/07/03 20:08 |

It'd be great if you could add the minimum system requirements as a FAQ question. Sure, and they will also be added to this page sometime soon...

I have been playing Mac NWN for two weeks now, both the Wailing Death module and several PC created modules and it is great! Only minor problem is very rarely getting stuck to a wall when resting. It happened twice, I was hiding from pursuing monsters and standing as close to a wall as I could get. When I finished resting, my character could not move in any direction. Weird, isn't it. Other than that, the game plays well, I even tried internet multiplayer and it worked!
Good job, guys! _________________ Hugs for Everyone!

Hey, huby... Welcome, glad you're enjoying it. Me too!
Just so you know, there is a command that might help you when you ocassionally get stuck "in" a wall or an object.
Do this:
Type the tilde key (~) to the left of the "1" key. A yellow command line will show up at the top left. Type "makesafe" and hit return.
This will move your character to a safe location, i.e. a valid location in the area. Hope this helps!
P.S. I haven't actually tried this myself, as so far I've been lucky enough not to experience a SINGLE Crash or Bug in the entire game, including online multiplayer. KUDOS to BioWare for what must be one of the most trouble-free games of this complexity ever. _________________ One of the original Fools of Coramir.
