We are trying to track down a crash in nwmain.exe crashing in a file called "CMDLINEEXT02.DLL". Unfortunately, the file "CMDLINEEXT02.DLL" is not a file that is used by BioWare, nor installed by SoU, nor does it exist on our development machines. At this time, we just don't know where its coming from.
We would ask for those of you that are having a crash in this file to reply in this thread with what part of the game you were in when this happened.
For those of you that aren't sure where you are crashing you usually can get more details from the error message dialog.
If the crash message is being hidden by the game, you can run NWN in a window and you should be able to get to the crash message that way.
Please keep the thread on this topic, as other issues and posts will be deleted. _________________ Derek French Technical Producer Live Team |

Tell me exactly where I can find the error message you want in XP - I just got it on today and don't know it at all. |

I found this reference in google on this file, it may be from CivIII PTW:
Just look in google groups, there are a few references and it does behave oddly.
...I have PTW, but then again my NWN still crashed aftre a HDD format with no PTW on board. So it may help some, but not I. |

If what I am posting is irrelevant then just delete this, but I thought I would continue with info from another google group search,
here is one excerpt of note: "Hi all, I've identified the file, nothing dodgy. It belongs to the SafeCast copy protection scheme. It's can be deleted after system reboot but will return every time the protected game is run, in my case NOLF2 as it's the only game I've played recently."
Okay, now the second bit I would appreciate some clarification from an expert on: "The most recent PC Magazine has a general article on Digital Rights Management (DRM), and another on Macrovision's Safecast tool and its use this year by Intuit's Turbotax 2002, in particular. You may find both interesting and useful. PC Mag and its Extreme Tech group have been very informative and helpful about this "problem" so far. There are still many unresolved issues, including whether writing to the boot sector should be permited."
Would anything like this writing to the boot sector be able to interfere with the game after a HDD format? |

My game seems to crash more with a custom made character than with a premade character. It crashes when I try to load or save a game with a character I made. But, when I used Drax and another premade character I tried this with, I could save, quick save, and load rather easily. This is just a theory, but, it's worth giving it a try. |

We have determined what this file is for. We'll continue to investigate, but would appreciate anyone having a crash that reports this .dll to post all system specs in this thread. _________________ Dave McGruther Systems Administrator BioWare Corp.

Unfortunately, the file "CMDLINEEXT02.DLL" is not a file that is used by BioWare, nor installed by SoU, nor does it exist on our development machines.
So let me see if I understand this...
The dll is used for copy protection.
The copy protection was added by the publisher after you released SoU for duplication.
You are supposed to support and enhance this product without being told what the publisher added.
Nice!
Hope the publisher gets their wrists slapped about this kind of crap.
Cheers,
TT. |

I am glad to see that my verdict was confirmed while I was asleep - it IS Atari!!!
I have the EXACT same problems as Loring...in fact, we were discussing this for a good part of yesterday.
Oh, and by the way, for the people who think of coming back to Win98SE: I've been using it for as long as I can remember; I have the same problems as the rest of you.
I am, however, disappointed to see that we can't do anything about it, as it was thrown in by Atari. I love solving my own problems.
*sigh* Oh well. At least we can act as support in this little "quest." ---- I'll try to get that error message for you...once I figure out how to run the game in a window(editing the ini did nothing). ...of course, seeing as how all the gods of irony insist on watching over me, it'll probably take over an hour to crash.
-I'll do (almost)whatever Bioware asks of me at this point. ---------------------------- EDIT: Also interesting to note...Loring and I have the SAME sound card. If we're the only ones experiencing this particular symptom. Well, then... _________________ I do what I must, when I must.Edited By TheOneWraith on 06/25/03 18:39 |

Just because the .dll exists is not the issue. When you crash, does the error message say anything about the .dll? If not, this is not related.

I am also yet to determine how to run in "windowed mode" to actually see the error that NWN produces. But my windows event log mentions a parse error on cmd (similar to cmdline...), and the cmdlineext02.dll file is created in our temp directories (the ones who are crashing) and not some other SoU users we have spoken to who are not crashing. Also, my dr. watson log mentions an access violation at the time of the crash. If you'd like, I'll find my errors that I've already posted here. _________________ Once in a while you can get shown the light, in the strangest of places , if you look at it right...... |

The latest thing I'm trying is: a poster (I think cole 1080) had mentioned that there was a valid windows .dll file called cmdlineext.dll (no 02 on the end). I found a downloadable copy of that file as it was not located on my machine, and placed it in my system32 folder. The thinking, although maybe abstract or flat out wrong, is that this ....02.dll file is replacing, or altering info from the cmdlineext.dll file. Just something to add to the list to the things I've tried... _________________ Once in a while you can get shown the light, in the strangest of places , if you look at it right...... |

I too am suffering random crashes and (less frequently) lockups from Neverwinter Nights (usually after 5 to 30 minutes of gameplay). I have the following:
Athlon XP 2600+ 333MHz FSB ASUS A7N8X Deluxe (nForce 2 w/SoundStorm audio) ASUS 9520 TD (GeForce FX 5200 w/ 128MB) 512 MB PC2700 DDR RAM
Windows 2000 SP3 DirectX 9 nVidia reference drivers 44.03 ASUS nForce 2 all-in-one drivers 1.16 Neverwinter Nights (No Shadows of Undrentide)
I used the critical patch update to 1.30 in case this fixed the problem (it still crashes).
I used the patch "remover" to go back to 1.29 (it still crashes).
I uninstalled NWN and did a full reinstall (including auto-updater upgrade to 1.30) and started playing one of the "demo" modules with a pregenerated character, without putting any other files into the install tree (it still crashes).
I tried running in windowed mode to catch any other error output, but no more information available. I do have "CMDLINEEXT02.DLL" on my system, though nothing seems to refer to this when the game crashes (error message simply refers to nwmain.exe and that it is writing a log, but I cannot find where the log is generated).
(If this is not related to this thread, it's a mighty strange Coincidence).
Event Viewer shows no new messages (since it started, and after the crash).
I have a friend who is also suffering problems since updating to 1.30 (including lockups and reboots). No further information as yet.
We will find a solution... |

That .dll file exists on ALL machines that run Shadows. It is part of SecuRom. So, unless you get a crash that says something like nwmain.exe caused an invalid page fault in module CMDLINEEXT02.DLL then the crash has nothing to do with this file (or SecuRom in theory). _________________ Dave McGruther Systems Administrator BioWare Corp.
