The original Eye of the Beholder grabbed gamers by their keyboards and wouldn't let them go. Now, 14 years later, a team of community members have made a gigantoid mod of the original adventure for Neverwinter Nights; plus, they've added a bevy of new NWN content. We spoke with team members Rick and Mika about the project. In other NWN related news, be sure to also read an interview with BioWare Designer David Gaider recently posted at the Ladies of Neverwinter site.

Why did the Ladies of Neverwinter interview get buried as part of the Eye of the Beholder project, after so many delays and all that fuss with it? I can understand it not getting it's own heading, but to be buried like that is pretty confusing.
Did LdyShayna upset you guys or something? |

Thanks for the feedback! I've tweaked the Wednesday news item to highlight the interview better.

I'm sorry, Ryuujin. Didn't mean to make you sad.
Thanks Johnn!
Hope everyone enjoys the answers to our little questions as much as I did. _________________ "True glory consists in doing what deserves to be written; in writing what deserves to be read; and in so living as to make the world happier for our living in it." - Pliny the Elder |

want to apologize to Ryuujin for not getting to put his comments in the interview. I did contact Ryuu about the interview, but he misunderstood what was happening and declined. I'm sorry bro, I should've been clearer. I also want to take this opportunity to say that some of our other team members were left out (Mark, Anthony, Wim and Erik) because they could not be reached for comment in the brief time we were given to respond to the interview questions. All the team members did a great job and deserve as much credit as Mika and I.

A New File has been uploaded and was tested and working with no File Corruption Errors. I personally downloaded the file and tested it just mins ago. We are sorry fro the inconvenience this has caused. We are not sure what happened to the file. The new file name is called "EyeoftheBeholderNew22.zip Again we are sorry for all the frustration this has caused some of you, believe me we are just as frustrated at what has happened. We are at the mercy of 3rd party host and have no control over the file once it’s uploaded.
On a side note please remember that this new version will not fix your old save games when you reload it. You must restart over.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Good stuff. Really. I like the new creatures best. It's really neat to see community efforts still churning out high-quality mods for a game this old. I guess it just speaks to the coolness of the original game and tools design. _________________

What is the big deal about yet another hack and slash mod? I mean aren't there dozens upon dozens of them already done and ready to download? From my memory EoB wasn't that great of a game in the first place. |

Yeah...I mean, this isn't meant as a knock on this particular module, as it seems very well made (although some of the writing could use a bit more editing), but I'm just not sure why it warranted this much hype as compared to the lack of recognition most other modules get. Ryuujin's new enemy models look spectacular, but when you get right down to it, it is still a remake of an old hack and slash computer game, and one that had already been converted for NWN. And I know that a number of other builders are quite annoyed by it, as their modules (some very good ones too, at least based on the ones I've tried so far) have basically been completely obscured by the amount of media exposure this one module received. I'm just not sure it was such a great idea to do this.

Hey Steve, I understand what you are saying, but please don’t bash our mod just because we know how to get it the right attention. If other modders did the same for their maybe they would have also gotten theirs notice more. And speaking of EOB already being converted your right this was the original one converted over 20 months ago you wont find the old version on the vault because we had it pulled shortly after its release. After its initial release and all of the feedback we got we decided that we needed to make a more realistic mod for the AD&D community. Our original one was not that realistic and we had many things wrong in it, so we went back and restructured the entire mod. If you don’t believe me here’s a link to the original one we release back in 12/5/02 Click Here
WE worked our rears off on this mod for 2 years straight and for you or anyone else to say its nothing special is your opinion and you are entitled to it. We didn’t get paid to make this mod its free and this is what really bothers me is when people say things with out thinking about what they are saying and bash something that a lot of hard work was put into so the community could benefit from it. Yes there are many other great mods out there and we are not trying to take anything away from them, this is but an instant in time brother so we are enjoying it while it last. And besides many others that are playing the mod happen to like it very much and have expressed it.
If our getting it attention bothers you, well I can only say Sorry.

Just to clarify, nowhere in my post did I intend to "bash your mod". In fact, I said that it was quite well made, and I meant that. Well, the comment about the writing is one negative, to be sure, but a just one I think. If you took what I said as some comment that your module is horribly inferior or bad, then I'm sorry, as that was not my intent, and perhaps I should have been more careful in my wording. My comments were really meant to question why ANY one mod would receive this much media attention relative to all the other modules released at the time. If it is simply a matter of knowing how to best get your module promoted, then I honestly would be very interested in hearing how you did that, as it was clearly very effective. In fact, I'm sure a lot of builders would very much appreciate some pointers in that regard.
Steve
P.S. I was actually referring to the Wolfspirit version that was already on the vault at the time, as I had never seen your previous version (it was apparently removed before I'd even gotten into NWN). But you don't have to prove yourself to me (or anyone else for that matter) with the link, as you've given me no reason not to simply take you at your word. _________________ Stravinsky NWVault Reviewer GuildEdited By Stravinsky00 on 03/28/05 22:34 |
