Bastions of War is a team-based, player versus player, arena module where NWN fans can flex their powergaming muscles, work out their daily stress, and beat the crap out of gnomes, bards, elves, and other deserving folk. :P We spoke with Alec Usticke, BoW's chief admin and scripter, to find out more about this entertaining mod.

I've been a member of the Bastions community for many years now, and the quality of the module has never ceased to amaze me. The amount of work the DMs put into it is astounding, and the care they show for the players is even more so.
After a mod has been around for a few years, it usually starts to go downhill. This has not been the case of Bastions. It has always been an uphill climb in quaility.

Having been addicted to Bastions of War for over 2 years now, I must say it's the best pvp server out there! Things get balanced very quickly and the good versus evil setting tends to create great bonding between players in each team. All in all bastions of war is an awesome server to play If you love to challange yourself against real players instead of boring monsters  |

Definitely a challenge if you’re looking for some great game play. I’ve played a few other PvP/Persistant work servers where PvP is a big part and none are as fun and intense as this module. One big problem though, a bit to addicting, you’ve been warned!

I have been playing BoW for over a year. I still do RP with a small group of friends but I spend most of my gaming time on BoW. There is something about fighting side by side with your friends and teammates against a team composed of like minded foes that makes BoW extraordinary fun.
Our forums are active and entertaining as well as thought provoking. Spending your time on BoW and the forums will make you a part of a great community. I encourage all that read this to log on, roll up a build, and play a round or two. If you are new to high level characters, I suggest you check out our best character section of our forums. You will find specific directions on how to build epic characters that are well suited to BoW. You will also find sound advice on how to build a character that can compete. If you have a question about a build there are usually plenty of helpful posts to point you in the right direction.
The items available are not very powerful and have no immunities; you need to rely on the strengths of your build more than the equipment here. Read the journal which shows the changes that have been made to balance gamplay. While the changes are few they are significant and will affect how you build your character. If you have never played in an arena server before don’t wait another second – log onto BoW now. I suspect you will become a regular (addicted) like I have.Edited By directrealist on 04/07/05 02:56 |

ive been playin BoW since it went live in jan 2002 and ive not stopped playing since. The module is a testament of the skills and dedication of the dm team and the long standing player who make bow what it is.
Simple put the best pvp server EVER

There are many good reasons why Bastions of War Guild has remained at the top of the "Most Active Guilds" list, here at NWN. But don't take our words for it; visit BoW and see why. Even people who dislike most
PvP environments (such as myself) are fans of BoW. |

BoW looks really awesome, I'd like to dust of my NwN CD and join in but I don't know where you go to download the modules or if you have to, spent 30 minutes looking around the website for the modules.
They're probably right in my face for all I know  |

Hehe, no problem. As discussed in the article, BoW is only available on our multiplayer servers. Nothing to download, just direct connect to IP address nwn.bastionsofwar.com or find us in the Arena section on GameSpy.

'Bastions of War'.
For those who want an unbiased opinion.
Pros:
*Teams (Good vs. Evil).
*Tons of cool places to battle.
*Spells, feats, skills, are nicely balanced.
Cons:
*Choice of players, only PGers like playing with PGers.
*All Players start at level 28, with 400,000 gold.
*+4 weapons, armor, and items, are common place.
*This is NWN, and not a first-person shooter. So BoW becomes nothing more then hack n’slash, with very few chances to use tactics.
*Bow’s player base is around 3005 with 90% of them PGers, for this reason balance at times does not exist.
BoWs needs to add:
Areas for levels 13-20
Areas for levels 20-28
Areas for Warriors only
Areas for Casters only
Areas for those who wish to use tactics (This will give RGers a place to play).
As PvP servers go, BoW is by far the best, which is not saying much. Since the only thing keeping BoW from becoming fully controlled by an uber player base (like every other PvP server), is that its a server vault.
PGers who are only into hack n’slash will enjoy BoW. RPers looking to use tactics, look elsewhere since you won’t find that here.
This is just my unbiased opinion.

Thanks Steve, your feedback is much appreciated. 
Well, maybe I am biased (  ), but I wouldn't say BoW lacks tactic. If we put aside the limitations of playing a D&D based game, where your hands' reflexes cannot evade a sword that is swinged against you (the game uses dice rolls instead ), there is alot of tactic and strategy involved, team-wise and solo-wise. In-fact, a team that uses a well-planned strategy is ought to winthe most XP\GP.
Also, there is alot of tactic\strategy involved in choosing who to engage, whether to use stealth or not, to choose the right feat to attack them, choosing the right weapon, quickly deciding which spell (defensive\offensive\healing) to cast (also deciding whether to use an AoE or not) etc.
But in general, strategy and tactics are a very big component in BoW playstyle. If you want your team to win the most XP\GP, then it'll require your team to play wisely, in squads or a big group (depends on the map and the team setup- it'd be smart to have 2 big squads, when each squad guards a Capture Point, or an important area strategy-wise) when each player's character has a certain role in the upcoming battle and knows how to operate in cooperation with his\her teammates.
Actually, if you'd like to see tactic\strategy at its best in a fast paced gameplay join us in the next NWCon tournament. Try not to faint from an overdose of those.
And btw, I found your idea of having certain areas restricted only for a certain type of character (melee\caster\ranged) very interesting. Thanks.
