It is always a treat to hear when Neverwinter is used in a completely new and surprising way beyond the gaming world. Peter Gorniak, a.k.a. Sumpfork, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) joins the educators of West Nottingham Shire for crafting NWN into a tool entirely different than what BioWare expected.

Looks like I get to the first to respond! Congratulations, Sumpfork, you're now officially a celebrity in the BioWare community.

First of all, a HUGE thank you for the work you do with Neveredit. It may sound silly (especially after NWN's already been around for ages in computer-game time), but seeing it progress as time goes on is really heartening to me as a Mac user. I look forward to it being as good as--heck, even better than--the Toolset we never got.

Second, your research sounds really interesting (either that, or you manage to make your interest in it contagious, which is just as good). Look forward to hearing more details when it's done.

Cheers,
Llandru

Pardon my ignorance, but I don't quite understand WHAT this is. The article gave no clues as to what it is even about oO

As far as I got from the site, it's a toolset for the aurora engine for mac. Though I could be wrong. No really the article should be more clear.

Hey folks - the article wasn't really about neveredit, so it didn't get explained much. Neveredit is our attempt at a cross-platform toolset, but can also be used a a library to manipulate NWN files in any other context. See the link in my sig for more info.

It sounds fascinating; using the NWN modules as socialogical testing grounds. Several questions:

1. You mentioned that one player has restricted speech; what other restrictions and/or enhancements did you place on other players and why? For ex. What are you trying to discover with the speech restriction?

2. You talk about a progression of modules. Is it the same group of players going thru each module? Or are you mixing up players? In short, is the module the test or are you testing a particular group of players for their reactions?

3. Are the modules connected in some way? Is there a progression in behavior that you're looking for from module to module? Or are the modules each a stand alone experiment in itself?

This really sounds intriguing, and I'll be keeping an eye out for any updates and reports you issue. Are you planning on posting your results eventually at this site or an entirely separate site? I'd be interested in a link when you get the data posted.

I can't really answer this question yet. I'll answer once I'm done with data collection.

It's a progression in the sense that I take what I learned from one study and module and use it in designing the next. The players are always random volunteers, so the same people might play all the modules or not.

Each module is a stand alone experiment.

The results will be published in the form of academic papers and my thesis and will be available on a separate site. I'll post some notes here, however, when that site goes public.

Do come over to my study sign-up site and see if you want to participate.

Thanks!

Do let me know a time when you can make it and I'll schedule some games. I don't want to flood neverwinterconnections with games, so I've been scheduling times for North America mostly, as most English speaking players seem to be from there.
Thanks.
