got it working, here's the steps for anyone in the same boat.

extract the following files into the directory where you would like to install the game.

data_shared.zip (on dvd)
data_linux.zip (on dvd)

download the Linux Client: Click Here

extract to nwn directory

download 1.66 update:

extract to nwn directory

run ./fixinstall

play using ./nwn

Initially I did not have video only an error msg: Cannot display this mode. Corrected by editing nwn.ini display mode settings for height and width (1280x1024 instead of 800x600 in my case).

No movies but the game is playable.

Movies could possibly be worked around by using NWMovies.

Well, I got the OC installed with this. Did that method install SoU and/or HotU and/or Kingmaker? If so, what extra did you do? I'm using the same OS as you - Ubuntu 5.10.

Bah, I'll probly figure it out soon enough, anyway. Oh, and to input my CD code thing, I had to have caps lock on. It wouldn't accept my key until I used caps, even though the letters all appeared in caps on the screen no matter what. Just a heads-up for those who have yet to attempt this.

Yep, figured it out - at least, the SoU and HotU expansions. Kinda obvious, but then, some people (like me) are quite unobservant. There are two files, path_to_cdrom/data/XP1.zip and path_to_cdrom/data/XP2.zip that I extracted before extracting the linux client and update. However, I still can't find the Kingmaker files. Anyone else know?

P.S. Sorry for the double post. I can't find the edit button.

P.P.S Whoa, that's strange. There's an edit button on this post, but no edit button on my last one. Uh...yeah...ok.

Glad to see my instructions were helpful. I haven't actually tried to install the expansions yet, figured I'd work my way through the original first (never played nwn before). Thanks for the tip though. Gotta love how the linux community figures things out on their own... Anyway good luck on getting Kingmaker installed.

Hey Guys,

I just picked up the Diamond copy of NWN myself, and while the installation for linux is fairly straightforward I had to do a little digging on the Kingmaker files.

It seems that Bioware (or whoever published the diamond version) didn't include the actual module files for Kingmaker on the disc, but rather all relevant files are insisde the windows only executable.

This makes it kind of hard to extract the linux files for kingmaker, but one solution was to install the diamond edition on a windows box and copy over the relevant files.

I'm taking a different approach and I'm just running the windows installation through wine (i'm also running Ubuntu 5.10) and then I'm going to try to copy over the files.

I think the challenge will be knowing which files to copy across

I'll repost after I'm done to let you know how it went.

Please let us know if you figure out a way to get Kingmaker
et al from the disk. This would be the only reason I would pick this up (glad I didn't now). I actually have bought every expansion/premium module they have, and would buy this if it would avoid contacting the mother ship like all the current premium modules do.

I _believe_ the premium modules would have to be installed in the evil empire (Windows), and copied over, then they _might_ work.

I noticed the installation process creates some ~nwn/premium/*.dat files that bear a suspicious resemblance to encryption keys of some form. (imo)

The installation process didn't correctly create those files under Wine. (It created them, but they don't work.)

Haven't verified this, but that's what I see.

YMMV/etc

After a week of on an off tinkering with my IBM T42 Laptop running Ubuntu Breezy, I finally have EVERYTHING working that should except for Kingmaker, I haven't tackled that yet. I am posting how I got this running in hopes that it might be of use to someone. The above documentation was helpful, however I ran into some problems with both sound and getting NWMovies to work. I have found that the absolute newest flgrx driver actually performs VERY well with Neverwinter Nights. I have all settings maxed out at 1024x768 and it runs flawlessly. Configuring xorg.conf was not fun, but hey that's another story.

------

  • -mkdir a directory for NWN (on your home driver perhaps)
  • -cd into it and run: unzip [cddir]/ data_shared.zip
  • -then: unzip [cddir]/ data_linux.zip
  • -unzip [cddir]/ XP1.zip (Replace everything)
  • -unzip [cddir]/ XP2.zip (Replace everything)
  • -download the linux client (early post has location)
  • -tar -zxvf [download-loc]/ nwclient129.tar.gz
  • -./fixinstall
  • -Download the patch (mentioned above) and extract. (replace everything)
  • -Now.. if you want newer soundcards to work properly (like on my T42 laptop) you are going to need to edit the ./nwn script. At this point you have two options, if you simply want audio to work and you don't care about movies follow the following:

-----

  • -Open the ./nwn startup script and edit
  • export LD_LIBRARY_PATH = ./lib:./miles:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
  • To read:
  • export LD_LIBRARY_PATH = ./miles:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
  • -This will tell nwn to use the Ubuntu SDL driver instead of the ancient one included with the installation.
  • -That's it if you don't want NWMovies.

-----
If you do want NWMovies you are going to have a lot of packages to install, changing some libSDL source code and recompiling, converting the movie files to another format (I choose ogm) and finally compiling and using the NWMovies library.
So we begin:

-----

  • -First create a new directory in your nwn installation dir called nwmovies
  • -Now download NWMovies at http://home.woh.rr.com/nwmovies
  • -Extract nwmovies-latest.tar.gz into this directory.
  • -If you are going to convert your movies to another format (I recommend) you can use nwnbink2ogm
  • -Assuming you plan to use that you are going to need to apt-get the following (make sure you have added both the universe and multiverse repositories):
  • -apt-get install wine autoconf gcc-3.4 gcc-3.4-base mencoder-586 mplayer-586 vorbis-tools ogmtools libasound2-dev
  • -Once that massive install is done you can download the RAD tools as mentioned in the nwbink tutorial and install it in a separate nwn dir. Now go through the tutorial in doing the conversion, then move the ./movies/*.bik files somewhere else. When all done make sure you can view a movie with mplayer -fs ./movies/BiowareLogo.bik
  • -Now that the movies are converted we can build and install nwmovies
  • -Run ln -sf /usr/bin/gcc-3.4 /usr/bin/gcc
  • -cd into the nwmovies dir.
  • -Now you need to perform some extra steps that I got from the nwmovies . README.softmix .txt
  • -mkdir libsdl and cd into it.
  • -Do an apt-get source libsdl1.2
  • -cd into the [newly created folder]/ upstream/tarballs/
  • -tar -zxvf [the only file there]
  • -cd into the new folder
  • -vi src/video/SDL_video.c
  • -do a find for: SDL_WM_GrabInputRaw
  • -Remove the static in front of the declaration.
  • -Save and exit
  • -./autogen.sh
  • -./configure --enable-alsa
  • -make (DO NOT INSTALL)
  • -Now cp src/.libs/ libSDL-1.2.so.0.7.0 [Your NWN dir] /lib
  • -ln -sf [your nwn dir]/lib/ libSDL-1.2.so.0.7.1 [your nwn dir]/lib/ libSDL-1.2.so.0
  • -Now setup mplayer to use SDL, open /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf in an editor.
  • -Change ao= to be ao=sdl
  • -Now we are ready to compile nwmovies
  • -cd back into the nwmovies dir and run:
  • ./nwmovies_install.pl ../lib/libSDL-1.2.so.0
  • -This should finish without errors and the nwmovies.so plugin should appear.
  • -cp ./nwmovies.so ../
  • -Now one last step!
  • -Open the nwn startup script in an editor, change it to the following:

---------------------
#!/bin/sh

# This script runs Neverwinter Nights from the current directory

export SDL_MOUSE_RELATIVE = 0
export SDL_VIDEO_X11_DGAMOUSE = 0
export LD_PRELOAD = nwmovies.so:${LD_PRELOAD}
export SDL_AUDIODRIVER = alsa

# If you do not wish to use the SDL library included in the package, remove
# ./lib from LD_LIBRARY_PATH
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH = ./lib:./miles:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
./nwmain $@

---------------------------------

  • -Run ./nwn
  • -nwmovies will do some very cool magic and exit.
  • -Run ./nwn again

AND IT WORKS!! Now wasn't that fun...

Feel free to voice any missing spots or unneeded steps if people find them. I love linux and three cheers to the nwmovies developer for some awesome work.

I should also note that the problem I was encountering with sound was that it would work for 20 minutes, then it would sound like it was corrupted. Voices would be choppy and music sounded disjointed. Switching the audio library fixes this problem. The reason I built up a new libSDL library was to fix the audio locking problem between mplayer and nwn. When I first built nwmovies only one of the two would have sound or it would crash on the first movie. nwmovies didn't want to use my system library when I compiled it (gave errors) and as mentioned earlier, the included one is out of date and can't use alsa... so I built my own.

To install the premium modules you must copy the following files from a Windows or WINE install into your Linux NWN directory. They should work perfectly assuming the rest of your install is not broken somehow.

Just an idea, but have any of you guys with NWN Diamond checked if you can download the modules off Bioware's Store? (Providing that you have registered your NWN Diamond CD keys in your account settings on the site.)

Theoretically it might be possible (you do after all have the modules associated with your CD key, otherwise they wouldn't work), so it might be worth checking out.

Well, I was lazy and just copied my entire install of NWN Diamond over from windows and everything works ... but don't worry I still had my share of "fun" getting SDL tweaked on x86_64 linux.

That said I haven't actually tried playing Kingmaker, but it shows up in the menu ... sadly I'm away from my home computer for a few days or I would try firing up Kingmaker to verify.

I read your post on this forum describing your efforts to build a 32bit SDL library. Just why do you need it? Well, I tried to build nwmovies on Ubuntu Hoary 64bit, but gave up because I did not want to install a complete 32bit chroot environment . But the Bioware supplied SDL library works just fine on my system. I usually build my own kernels, so I simply included the OSS compatibility parts to ALSA, and sound was up and running. That seems a lot less work an pain than building a 32bit SDL version on 64bit Linux. Perhaps there are some advantages I just can't see right now.Can you help me decide if this is worth the effort?

Greetings
