I would like some final clarification as to whether NWN will run at all with any of the Voodoo series cards.... I know that there hasn't been updated drivers released in quite awhile due to 3DFX going under, however I have installed and played successfully recent games such as Dungeon Siege without any problems at all. My concern at this stage with the game releasing is that many of us "Voodoo" owners will go to purchase the game only to encounter many problems...There are ALOT of these cards still out on the market, in fairly recent high end machines, and the minimum specs in the FAQ do not allude at all that this game won't work with Voodoos. I realize that Bioware has no responsiblity in terms of compatibility, but an "unofficial" announcement stating this seemingly "known" issue would be nice just to give those of us still with Voodoos fair warning. |

Granted I don't work for Bioware, but I'm running a 16 meg Voodoo3 on a 500mhz Dell with 256 megs of ram and windows 2000 at work and I don't have any problems running the beta toolset.I will say it is much slower than my personal machine at home, but it does not crash out.
Just be sure to get drivers that are digitally signed by microsoft and you should be fine. This may be hard to do, but you can always check out the site below for more help:

The main issue is NWN's use of OpenGL, which Voodoo cards are poor at in general. I have the beta toolset running on a Voodoo 3, and aside from a major issue with the texture mapping on characters, it actually works fine. (It seems to be scaling the textures backwards, that is, when you zoom away from a character, its textures grow larger, and when you zoom right up to the character you can see the texture repeating endlessly. That seems like a relatively easy fix for the live team to just add an option that reverses the scaling, similar to stereo reverse in most games.) I also have a Voodoo 4, but it is sitting in a box right now. I'll install it sometime and see how it behaves.
Edit:
Really FredBart? No problem on the character textures? Hmm, I'll have to try some drivers then... Currently running the Omega Drivers. I _do_ have a GeForce, but I'd like to eventually get the Voodoo running the game as well.

Interesting. This adds to my confusion... There seems to be a large faction however that have stated quite simply that the game will not run period on Voodoo 3 cards (not sure about 4's or 5's). It's good to know I guess that you are getting it to run.
I'm running a T-bird 1.2 ghz, 256 mb, 40 g HD, Voodoo 3 2000 AGP.
I'm probably going to go with a GF3 eventually, but I'm wanting somewhat of a definitive answer as to whether Voodoos are a lost cause or not. And more of an informal "FAQ" if you will for Voodoo owners wanting to buy the game. |

Well, the Voodoo 3 is below the minimum requirements I believe, aside from its poor OGL performance, but I want to set up a NWN LAN, and since I already have to buy more than one copy of the game, (grumble grumble, not Blizzard, no Spawning) I'd rather not buy a bunch of new video cards as well.
I've just downloaded the Omega "Special" Drivers, which apparently, according to user comments, fix a variety of problems in recent games, so I'll let you know how it works out.
