This thread replaces our previous threads, and will serve as a central location for our discussion of overlooked modules and associated lists.
Our group releases overlooked module reports each month based on contributions from the users of this forum--we are happy to receive your contributions! We post these reports here for comment prior to sending them to the vault for a community news item. Please note that you can find our master list of overlooked modules at this location.
Cheers, Berliad |

Berliad's Brief June '06 – a report on the current status of modules on our list.
Update on Master List
First, I'm pleased to report that at least in part as a direct result of our activities here, one module graduated from our list this month: Saleron's Gambit, Chapter 2. This module was featured in our first monthly report, which also coincided with a vault review of Chapter 3. Since then, the SG series has been a hot commodity in the nwn community. Congrats to its author, Tiberius209. I'm sure we'll see the Saleron's Gambit series in the hall of fame very soon, and we all look forward to Chapter 5's release!
Overall, there are 82 modules on our list, which is up 3 from last month. Of these, 46 have yet to be featured on our monthly reports. Assuming 5 modules per month and no additional entires, it will take us 9.2 months to feature all of the remaining modules.
Impact of Last Month's Overlooked Module Report (previous reference date is 13 May '06)
* Battle of Kadir Pass, Chapters 1, 2 & 3: 364 downloads for the series this past month, which is up from 249 the prior month. * Dark Fortress: 173 downloads this past month, which is up from 67 the prior month. * A New Journey Begins: 78 downloads this past month, which is up from 33 the prior month. * FK The Shadow Relic: 65 downloads this past month, which is up from 19 the prior month. * Sleepwalker 1: Desert Greed: 163 downloads this past month, which is up from 55 the prior month.
Our numbers seem down a bit this month. In prior months, we've been able to reasonably expect ~200 downloads per month per module.
Modules with fewest downloads/month 1. DD1 - Dwarves in the Woodwork @ 9/mo - I think this module's download totals are incorrect. 2. Legend of Honor: State of Mind @ 12/mo - Previously #3 3. Strange Alliance (non HCR) @ 12/mo - Previously #4 4. Annals of the Blade Errant @ 15/mo - Previously #5 5. For the Love of Winter (Part One) @ 15/mo - New addition this month.
Modules with highest downloads/month 1. M's All in One Equipment Modifier @ 509/mo 2. SQ2 – Pawns of Darkness @ 506/mo 3. Advanced Battle of Dragons @ 334/mo 4. Surviving Horror 2 @ 295/mo - New This Month 5. Angel Falls @ 288/mo - Previously #4
Modules with fewest votes/download 1. Atlantis, After the Deluge @ 0.14% 2. SP1 - The Gathering Storm @ 0.16% 3. Oslan Legacy @ 0.20% 4. SP3 - The Sirens of Doom @ 0.24% - Previously #5 5. RKP - Training and Supplies @ 0.25% - New to this ranking
Modules with most votes/download 1. DD1 - Dwarves in the Woodwork @ 10.42% - I think this module's download totals are incorrect. 2. Aylomeiger's Magical Curios @ 2.96% - New to list this month. 3. Dark Ages Ch. 1 @ 2.45% - Previously #4 4. Sleepwalker 1: Desert Greed @ 3.08% - Previously #3 5. Elena's tale: Roses for Rosa @ 2.32%
Download/month cutoff status Currently, we have a cutoff of 250 downloads/month. Modules with higher download rates get a "delay" tag, and no more than 1 module with a delay tag may be featured per month. To examine whether this is appropriate, here are the download rates for single player accessible, story-based modules on the top-15 new modules list on the vault:
* Fall of Aielund, p2 @ 1887/mo * A Dance with Rogues 1 @ 1758/mo * Red Moon Rising @ 1072/mo * A Dance with Rogues 2 @ 632/mo * N1: Against the Cult of the Reptile God @ 542/mo * The Spires of Ravenloft: Revised Edition @ 518/mo * SQ2: Pawns of Darkness @ 506/mo * A Tangled Web @ 411/mo * Saleron's Gambit 4 @ 377/mo * Blackwall Keep 2 Beta @ 271/mo * UK5 - Eye of the Serpent @ 262/mo * Saleron's Gambit 3 @ 202/mo * Nature of the Beast @ 170/mo
Blackwall Keep 2 is a beta and therefore may have a lower than expected download rate as many players like to wait until a module goes final to play it. Saleron's Gambit 3 spent several months in almost total anonymity until the efforts of this group as well as some other promotional items brought it widespread attention. Therefore, I'm comfortable ignoring those two modules. The latter one, Nature of a Beast, is more problematic. It is on our overlooked module report and hasn't gotten a ton of attention, but it has been on the top new mods list before. Nevertheless, aside from that module, the 250 download/month cutoff seems to work well. -BEdited By Berliad on 06/11/06 22:23 |

Here was the selection order for the June report. No delay tagged modules came up. Starlight almost pulled off a sweep! 1. Aylomeiger's Magical Curios (lucky - this is its first month on the list) 2. Temple of Urth 2 - The Urthlands 3. Legend of Honor: A Cure for Mara 4. A Journey to Remember 5. Cape of Lost Hope
There are two legend of honor modules on our list, but they seem to be stand-alone adventures (a new character is recommended for the second mod), so I was only going to feature CfM--otherwise the description becomes difficult. But I'm open to alternatives. -B
<b>The Overlooked Module Report – June 2006</b>
<p>Over in the <a href = "LINK">Bioware Forums</a>, a group of us have collectively started a list of modules that we feel have been overlooked relative to some of the more popular titles. Defining what is and is not an "overlooked" module is admittedly a subjective exercise, but we felt there were enough great suggestions in our thread to warrant compiling this list and sharing it with the visitors of the Vault.
<p>Because our list is quite long, we're releasing this list in monthly installments. We'd be delighted to receive additional recommendations for future releases of our list, so feel free to <a href = "LINK">drop by</a> the thread with your ideas.
<p>Without further ado, here is the monthly report of selected overlooked modules:
<p>* <a href = "LINK">Aylomeiger's Magical Curios</a>. This is mainly a hack 'n slash mod, but with some interesting puzzles. Read the readme included before you start the game (rec'd by Starlight). Currently only 270 downloads and 8 votes.
<p>* <a href="LINK">Cape of Lost Hope</a>. Challenging combat, plus dialog that features options for role-playing. It is good for level 1-2 characters. The only "shortcoming" is that it does not have a definite ending (rec'd by Starlight). Currently only 674 downloads and 5 votes.
<p>* <a href="LINK">A Journey to Remember</a>. A short module at around 30 minutes, it is mostly a hack and slash mod. However, the little twist in the ending is interesting and I think it is worth to mention it here (rec'd by Starlight). Currently only 421 downloads and 8 votes.
<p>* <a href = "LINK">Legend of Honor: A Cure for Mara</a>. A module with a mix of both hack 'n slash action as well as roleplaying. While there is little custom content, the author does add interesting elements inside the module. Also, how rare is it that our heroes go on an adventure that is not for fame, money, or treasure, but rather to find a cure for their own sister (rec'd by Starlight). Currently only 610 downloads and 5 votes.
<p>* <a href = "LINK">Temple of Urth 2 - The Urthlands</a>. Quick Pros: Many tilesets used in such a small module. Quick Cons: Some mini map areas oversized (rec'd by Steve Savicki). Currently only 126 downloads and 1 vote.
<p>We encourage everyone to check these modules out! And thanks to the authors of these modules for their contributions.
<p>If you are aware of modules that are overlooked, please <a href = "LINK">drop by</a> our thread and give us your recommendations. You can find our entire list of overlooked modules <a href = "LINK">here</a>. |

I recommend another mod:
DemonSoul 1 - Cradle Of Darkness
The PC is the son/daughter of a man who run a less than legitimate business in town. The PC is one of his staff the intimate people who do not pay in time or even rid out some who offend father. The PC carry out his "business" today and will find out his/her life will be completely changed from now on.
This is a short mod with an interesting story and good PC-henceman interaction. However, as the author has not appeared for more that a year, it could almost say that part 2 will not appear. |

Starlight, you're almost single-handedly keeping is current with suggestions, so don't worry too much about it. I think perhaps next month I'll see if someone (perhaps jfoxtail, since he's offered) would be interested in updating the download/vote counts and such on the spreadsheet. That's the most time-consuming thing for me. If he (or someone else) does that, I could handle updating the master list, writing up the monthly brief, and pulling modules for our report.
Looks like no one's objecting or commenting on this month's posts, which is good. I'll give them another looksee before I submit them tomorrow, but I think everything looks good. -B _________________ *Overlooked Modules Project *The Hero's Path Module List |

Thanks Berliad.
Another suggestion again.
Legacy of the Liosalfar
This is a short and nice mod (not more than 2 hrs). This is the first mod I have played that almost have no combat at all (except those Bioware contest mod). It is not suitable for power gamers or those who like hack'n slash. However, this short mod does looks like a bedtime story. It also give me a new aspect for "hero". "Hero" does not mean you have to fight any evil, any monsters or save the country or the world. "Hero" just mean the one who could offer help to the people when they are in needs. |

@everyone,
I've submitted this month's overlooked mod report. It looks basically identical to the one above, as I didn't see any typos nor anything I could really add.
Also, Jay Watamaniuk would like to conduct an interview with us about the Overlooked Modules Project for a Bioware Wednesday. Since this project we do is such a group effort, I want the interview to be a group effort. So I think what I'll do is just post the interview questions as well as some preliminary answers to those questions. You folks can then post corrections/modifications/additions. Look for that later tonight.
@jfoxtail - I'll send you an e-mail soon with the excel file and a description of what I've been doing. It's not terribly complex, though it's also not the most attractive spreadsheet I've ever done. We're good until next month, but I'd love to have the help at that time! -B _________________ *Overlooked Modules Project *The Hero's Path Module List |

Here's the interview questions from Jay:
Quote: How about to start we can run off an interview to intro you and your team and what you are doing? 1. What name would you like to use in this interview? 2. Can you explain what you and you team are up to? 3. How do you locate your selections? Can fans send in suggestions? 4. When do you post your report on overlooked modules? 5. How can I help?
Preliminary Answers:
1. (I'm not sure how to handle a roll call of sorts. This has always been a fairly loose and open group. Certainly there are some folks who have put substantial time into this project: caesarbear, jfoxtail, lebowski, starlight, myself, etc (apologies for omissions). But there are countless others who have chimed in from time to time, be it on policy issues or to make module recommendations. And it was El Dano's original thread that started it all. Any advice on this is welcome.)
2. Last October, a module author named El Dano made a post on the Bioware Players - NWN Modules forum talking about a module he'd recently played. While not spectacular, he reported that it was a lot of fun, and yet it hadn't even gotten to 300 downloads despite being available for download on the vault for several months. He wondered if there were other modules like that one -- modules that had a lot of merit, but just weren't getting the attention they deserved. There was a great response, with poster after poster recounting his or her own personal favorite overlooked modules.
Within a few days, the list had grown in excess of 20 modules with more coming in by the hour. So we decided to organize this list of hidden gems and start releasing a few selections each month to help players find these modules. Since that time, we've continued to gather new submissions for overlooked modules (the list is now over 80 modules long), and we've released eight monthly reports of overlooked modules, the most recent being our June 2006 report. We've received lots of very positive feedback from both players who use the list to find fun modules they hadn't seen, as well as module authors who have been able to gain greater exposure via having their module nominated to our list.
(as a side note, not necessarily for this interview, I'm pleased to report that that module that El Dano featured in his original post, Dark Water's Edge, now has ~1300 downloads and 20+ votes!)
3. From the beginning, this has been a community-driven project in that anyone is welcome to participate. We, the organizers, have put in place a few guidelines to help us focus on modules that are truly overlooked (e.g. it should not be in the NWVault Hall of Fame, and it shouldn't be on the top new mods list at NWVault), but anyone can stop by our thread in the Bioware forums and recommend a module. We just ask that you include a link, as well as a few words on what you found enjoyable about the module. We'll then add it to our master list, from which we pull 5 selections each month and advertise them in a community news item.
4. We post a new report each month, usually around the 15th, at NWVault (nwvault.ign.com). You can find our master list of overlooked modules, as well as links to each of our reports, at this link: Click Here
5. The best thing for us and our project is to get as much exposure as we can, and thus get those modules we promote as many downloads as possible. Providing a mention of our monthly reports in Bioware Wedesday items would be a fantastic help to us! |

Excellent stuff B. Here's what I would add:
For #2 end the "history" tone of voice on the first paragraph - first sentence of second paragraph should end the first paragraph.
Then add a second paragraph that talks about what we are "up to" in a less matter of fact way, and addresses some of our purpose, like this:
"We decided to organize a list of hidden gems. We see an issue facing the community where the sheer number of good modules could intimidate prospective players. Some hard and valuable work is going underappreciated because players feel swamped by the choices and can't see all the modules that fit their interests. The best help is simply to rely on the word of mouth. Since NWN modules can effect different players in different ways, just like movies, the most reliable way to know if you will enjoy one is to hear what someone else enjoyed. We focus on collecting these recommendations and making them easy for the community to see. By publishing these recommendations each month, we put a spotlight on what the community has always done."
Then continue with the "where are we now" of the third paragraph:
"We continue to gather new submissions for overlooked modules (the list is now over 80 modules long), and we've released eight monthly reports of overlooked modules, the most recent being our June 2006 report. We've received lots of very positive feedback from both players who use the list to find fun modules they hadn't seen, as well as module authors who have been able to gain greater exposure via having their module nominated to our list." _________________ NWN2 Vault Voting FAQ Overlooked Module Report - March 2007 |

For #3, apart from HoF and in top 15 list of new modules. There are also two criteria we have raised. Maybe if we could use a numbered list to represent it:
"3. From the beginning, this has been a community-driven project in that anyone is welcome to participate. We, the organizers, have put in place a few guidelines to help us focus on modules that are truly overlooked based on the following criteria:
1. it should not be in the NWVault Hall of Fame 2. it shouldn't be on the top new mods list at NWVault 3. it have to be released for at least three months 4. for those mod which fullfil the minimum requirement to be assented to Hall of Fame, i.e. 25 votes and 2500 downloads, will be removed from the list.
Anyone can stop by our thread in the Bioware forums and recommend a module. We just ask that you include a link, as well as a few words on what you found enjoyable about the module. We'll then add it to our master list, from which we pull 5 selections each month and advertise them in a community news item."
For #5, apart from exposure of the list, we could also re-emphasize that people are welcome to submit their suggestion. Edited By Starlight on 06/16/06 06:55 |
