Windows Vista and XP users that are using Nvidia ForceWare drivers from 158.22 to 162.22 encounter a black screen in place of the main menu when launching Neverwinter Nights 1.68
BioWare's contact at Nvidia has now been made aware of the issue.
The current solution for Windows XP users (Using a GeForce 8000 series card) is to roll back to Forceware version 97.94 .
Windows XP users (not using am 8000 series card) can solve the issue by rolling back to 94.24
Windows Vista users (6000, 7000 and 8000 series cards) can resolve this issue by installing the ForceWare 163.11 (Beta Drivers) which support the 6000, 7000 and 8000 series cards. A Windows XP version of these drivers is forthcoming.
A viable work around for those users that either want to wait for a non-beta driver or do not want to roll their existing drivers back is to create a shortcut to nwmain.exe, right click on it, choose "Properties", the "Shortcut" tab, and then in the "Target" field add the following text after "\NWN" (i.e. C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN\)
nwmain.exe +TestNewModule "modulename"
Please note that there is a space before the + sign in the above line. This will launch the game and immediately try to load a module with the name "modulename" (which shouldn’t exist). You could then use the "cancel" button to back out to the main menu and start your game as normal.
Additional updates to the issue will appear in this thread. Please avoid starting new threads to discuss this issue, conversation in existing threads is encouraged.
Edited download link urls. Edited shorcut target for clarity _________________ Jason Barlow Community Production Coordinator BioWareEdited By Jason Barlow on 10/17/07 20:14 |

Right, but that doesn't solve the problem of being unable to enter with the DM client. I tried using -dmc in the shortcut, but this didn't work. |

That's right, it doesn't
None of the "work around" solutions actually "fix" the issue. In your case it would be best to update to either update your drivers using the Beta Drivers or roll back to a driver version that works properly with our game. You could also try the other -dmc commands in this thread: Click Here _________________ Jason Barlow Community Production Coordinator BioWareEdited By Jason Barlow on 08/15/07 23:08 |

Unfortunately, neither of those versions are listed on the linked page (I have been looking for the last few days and always end up back there).
I have a 8600 GTS that runs the game like a dream, but after about 20 minutes (give or take 19) my computer locks up, loses its signal to the monitor, and I need to reboot. So I guess it's more of a nightmare than an actual dream, but while it's working it's amazing.
My card was shipped with a disc that says version 75.7. I tried updating to the latest drivers but got the black screen mentioned. I used a work-around, but it still randomly crashed. I will try "close to" the drivers you mentioned, but are there actual links to the drivers, or a link to a page that actually has those version numbers? Perhaps there are supposed to be different versions? I am running XP, if that makes a difference on which of the versions I should pick.
Thank you for posting this thread, I have been feeling a little depressed whenever my new, expensive machine crashes playing the game I basically got it for. _________________ DragonTayl |

Reference for people who want further discussion of this problem: NVidia 8000 series blank screen issue. There are some other workarounds posted there.
(Maybe we can discuss the problem there, and reserve the sticky for solutions? Many of the other stickies have been so clogged with posts reporting problems that it's tough to find the posts containing solutions.) _________________ Sorry. We're closed. Cheers.Edited By The_Krit on 08/16/07 21:40 |

Except that Jason Barlow put the last post on that thread to say he was staring a new thread. This one. I agree that it would be good to keep this to solutions. My solution appears to have been to download "optimized" drivers for nVidia. I searched for them on the internet and there were actually quite a few to choose from. I got a serious jump in frame rates (even though I was already playing maxed out and it was smooth - I can tell in the toolset) and a crashing problem I had went away. I still have the menu problem, but that is minor and because I chose the "latest" optimized drivers.
So, if you go out and get optimized drivers (which I highly recommend) make sure to compare what nVidia drivers the optimized drivers are *based* on.
Here is one place to find them: http://www.ngohq.com/ _________________ DragonTayl |

Try the 97.78 Drivers-420
How do you get them to install? They say they dont support my hardware, and looking at Products Supported on the download page says only a couple Quaddro cards.. _________________ When I said "Death before Dishonor", I meant in alphabetical order.. |

My computer is having similar problems but I am using a GeForce 6600 GT but you have a link to the 8800. Do I need to buy the 8800 or do you have a link for the 6600? |

Yes I understand the forceware drivers are supposed to work with all geforce cards but when I go to update it says GeForce 8800. I was looking at the site and they allow you to choose between different geforce cards. I can't find the older ones at the nvidia.com site. I can't roll back the drivers because I didn't install the old ones first. When I reinstalled windows I just got the latest drivers. |

I have a 7300 LE PCI Express. I too am having issues with a black screen when I try to login as a DM or a Player. This proves a serious issue for me when I have dedicated myself as a DM for a specific server and cannot login to put in my time.
I had updated my drivers to this card last week. But I do not see any options to de-download back to what I was at before for the card noted above.

Anybody know if the new Beta drivers released by nVidia today (163) have a fix in it? All I see on their list of changes is geneeral game fixes, nothing in specific aside from Bioshock. |
