Here's a little quote from the gamebanshee walkthrough that may help:
Quote: There are a couple of things to be done here before you can go up against Desther. First you will need to destroy the Ritual Golems that surround Desther and protect him from any harm. Be careful though because several other undead are inside as well. Do not forget your Stone of Recall is things get bad. Also Desther as you will soon notice has a HUGE amount of hit points and no matter what damage you deal to him he will be barely injured.
Don’t panic because of this, though. The game wanted to ensure that Desther could not be killed by accident and he will surrender while at barely injured if you deal enough damage to him. When he does you will be able to talk to him but remember to loot the place before turning Desther in thus ending this Chapter. You will also gain 300 experience points for making Desther Surrender.

Well, that part you quoted isn't very good. For starters, you can't use the Stone of recall in that area, its usage is blocked.
Better advice: #1 rest before you enter the area, and organize all your resources (spells, equipment, magical artifacts etc.. ) Maybe buy some more at the merchant NPC (The boy in the cellar, he also sells one of those rare bags of holding you might want) Once you enter the last area, you can't go back anymore. #2 Clear the two side rooms first. #3lure all the wandering opponents from the main room towards you and fight them at the doorway. #4 as long as you don't attack them, Dester and his protector creatures will not either, so loot the storage rooms at your lesure for more stuff you can use. There are magical potions available that might be useful. #5 Rest again, especially if you are a spell caster. Once the area is cleared except for Dester and his creatures, you can rest in some corner of the area outside of the main room. #6 now its time for mister big himself. First, neutralize 3 of his creatures while preserving your resources. #7 After 3 have been neutralized, Dester will start attacking, so this is when you should neutralize the remaining creatures as fast as possible, not holding back. #8 Once all protector creatures are neutralized, it is time to begin with Dester. He is given a large amount of temporary HP by the script, temporary HP are HP above the normal character maximum HP, as long as his current HP is not below the normal maximum. he will remain "uninjured" even though he loses HP. Once his temporary HP are gone, he will be "injured" a bit, this is when he will surrender. Once he surrenders, you have won. It is an important part of the plot that you don't kill him, so it has been rigged so that you can't, don't even bother trying. Make sure you have collected all loot before you turn him in via the dialog options, you can't go back after that.
What I sometimes do: I do the guardian spirit quest at the last possible moment and ask for a temporary boos as reward, then I quickly move to the endgame area and fight the wandering creatures with the boost, thus preserving some resources.
If you want more specific tips, it would be helpful if you tell us your character class(es) and build. _________________ Power to the MAS(ses) Communication is not a technolegy, it is a wonder, if it is at all.Edited By SevenMas on 10/23/07 19:51 |

#2 Clear the two side rooms first.
I never bother with the side rooms. Mainly because there’s no place to rest in Desther’s compound*, but also because once you’ve destroyed everything in the main hall and defeated Desther, all the undead in the sub-rooms disappear. So why suffer through extra battles depleting spells and energy that you can’t replenish?
*I’ve heard some claim that you can rest in some corner of Desther’s compound, but I’ve never found that to be the case. I clicked on practically every square of area out in that hallway, and have NEVER found a place where I could rest! It’s not worth the stress, thus I never bother with the side-rooms anymore. _________________ "Me gots art crap you might like." That is because you must also make sure there aren't any creatures inside the main room that are close enough to prevent you from resting. Depending on how the hostiles wander around, you can even rest without clearing the main room.
The rest spot is in the hallway on the opposite side of where you enter the area.
Also, you may want to clear the side rooms, simply because it is extra XP, or because they are all unholy creatures that must be purified? _________________ Power to the MAS(ses) Communication is not a technolegy, it is a wonder, if it is at all. |

It is definitely possible to rest in the upper floor. There are a couple ways of doing this. Before Desther starts attacking (though when the other baddies are lured out) you can rest right at the foot of the stairs down.
Once Desther has begun his attack it's also possible to rest. Me being the sneaky type, I'd lure Desther down to the stairway area, or just basically the outer hall way area and take an invisibility potion. I'd then run into the back of the main room, or one of the adjoining rooms for a quick break.
(I have very recent experience with this as I'm currently in the process of replaying the OC for the first time since 2002/2003. Two expansions and many PWs later, I have to say that I'm really enjoying myself.) |
