I just heard that E. Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons, has died at the age of 69. I just wanted to give the man a shout out. It is quite possible to think that without Gary Gygax and Dungeons and Dragons, BioWare and Neverwinter Nights would not be here today.
Although it is tempting to make light at the death of the man "He must have failed a saving throw" for example, I saw this on anotehr forum and thought I'd post it here as well.

This is sad news. He did more than contribute to the invention of a table-top RPG system loved by millions. D&D was a significant addition to the way we think about games. Even non-gamers, people who wouldn't be caught dead doing something as "nerdy" as RPG gaming, have heard of D&D. It's a part of our culture. It's entertained and inspired generations, and will continue to do so for generations to come. Not a bad legacy at all. GG GG! |

FTA - Besides his wife, Gygax is survived by six children.
Also survived by one of the best games period.
Thanks Mr. Gygax, D&D has been a very positive thing in my life.

I am sorry for his family, wife and 6 kids, and all he has left behind. He left a big, big mark upon our culture (bigger, I warrant, then many will have guessed), and inspired countless people to greatness.
It is in human nature to play-act, and unfortunately it is also in human nature to 'grow up' and leave this essential human element behind. Gary Gygax rolled a crit against such a notion, and smashed it down, allowing the rest of us to enjoy roleplaying.
For that alone, society owes him a debt of gratitude.
May he find eternal peace.

Thank you Gary. I credit you personally with a lot of my achievements.
Until I discovered D&D in 8th grade I didn't see any point in reading, writing, and 'rithmatic. I would surely have dropped out had you not provided me with such a compelling and fun reason to learn all three.
Heaven may not have the best band, but I'll wager they have the best DM now.
My prayers are with you and your family.
