hello guys, just a quick question, i have a Pixi familiar, is there any way to stop it from auto attacking? whenever it sees monsters it runs off and starts attacking them and gets itself killed.. is there any way to stop it from attacking and just follow me around opening locked chests when i need it to?

The best way I've found is to hotkey the stand your ground button and have the pixie stay behind while you explore. You can always call her back using the follow me command as you move up. Conversely, possess her and explore with her invisibly, then stand her somewhere while you catch up.

The default AI has its flaws, but you might be able to find a mod that improves it (maybe someone else can point you to them?). I've never actively used such a mod playing the OC or any other campaign, but some custom campaigns include it already. I'm pretty sure that you can order your henchmen to attack only if you want them to, so a companion should be able to follow these orders, too.

Tony K's AI mod gives you options to stop your familiar from being suicidal, among other things

Yes. Tell it to guard you. (Quickchat VWF by default.)
