I have an opportunity to purchase a dual core Intel Pentium P4 XEON 3.0Ghz (800mhz / 1MB Cache) HP DL360 server with 2GB DDR PC2700 DDR 333 SDRAM ECC RAM (4x512MB).
But I'm also looking at getting just a regular desktop computer with AMD Phenom II X2 550 3.1GHz AM3 L2 1MB with DDR2 800 2x 1GB CL5 Non-ECC dual channel memory.
I know nwn uses only 1 core but which would run the nwn server faster? |

Oh I forgot to mention that I would probably buy a good server nic card for the desktop computer if I were to get one.
I would use the built in nic card for the hp server system as I am guessing that it is specially designed to handle a lot of traffic.Edited By Caven on 10/21/09 19:16 |

either machine will will work wonderfully, I have the same HP (with 3.4GHz xeons) rig just waiting for me to get the time to set it up, although I'm setting it up with VMware so I can do more with those extra cores.
as for the nic, I run servers for a living and can tell you that NWN even as a server really doesn't move all much data. the onboard nic on the desktop is more than enough. I mean unless you have an asyncronous 10 meg fiber optic connection to the internet at your house, you'll never move enough data to notice the difference.Edited By captain_frostbyte on 10/23/09 02:24 |

Go with the Phenom for sure. It's based on a new chip introduced just this year.
P4 Xeon may be server-grade but it's also based on a 6+ year old architecture. This means the P4 has lower instructions per clock and performance per watt than the Phenom due to die shrinks and other advancements over the years. So even though it's only 100Mhz slower, its actual throughput is actually much further below the level of a hypothetical Phenom running at 3.0Ghz. It's even using DDR-333 which less than half the speed of the DDR2-800 in the AMD rig. And it'll probably consume more power too, which isn't good for a server box running 24/7.
Alternatively, you could wait for intel's upcoming dual core chips, which should be here in Q1 2010
Unless you're running with 70 players on I don't think you'll see the difference though.

I thought the real advantage to a server NIC is that it handles the network processing chores so the CPU doesn't have to as it would for onboard (or even most add-in NICs.) Is it a negligible benefit? _________________ Aglarond - Kingdom of the Simbul PW: 2 years of discussions, concepts, and modifications before we even thought about building!! |
