I've done a few projects in the past, and was curious if you all think there's a point in starting a new project at this point.
I was looking to start a new mod for online play, where players get right into the action right away, and don't need to play copious hours to progress. The mod will also feature the ability to customize your items, solo for experience, and group for legendary items, without having to explore hundreds of areas.
What do you all think? |

Sure, I start a new project practically every other week. As long as the vault hosts NWN1 modules, keep making 'em. People are still making FRUA mods. _________________ Ultimate NWN 1 Module List |

Glad someone noticed.
Anyway, if you think it's fun to build it, go ahead. People are still playing NWN online and if you build a mod you like, chances are other players will like it too. |

See, I am worried that if I build, I won't see one player come play on my server. It seems theres only about 1500 people playing this game consistantly at any one time, unless this is higher (I remember an old gamespy link that showed the actual amount of players, but that link doesn't work anymore). |

I understand, it's a thought not to be dismissed that easily. There's always a certain risk. Whenever I look at the Gamespy tabs there are lots of servers currently empty, and quite a few of them are not bad servers at all.
But there are also younger servers like World Serpent Inn or Heartlands (1 or 2 years old, I guess?) that seem to be a success, so I assume it's still possible to get a decent playerbase, although a well built server is no guarantee yet.
The question is WHY do you want to build? Is it because you have fun building the mod you'd like to play yourself? Is it because you want to play with like-minded people? Is it because you want to be a DM? Are there any alternatives for you, like building a Single Player mod or running games as a DM on NWN Connections?
And how long would it take you to build that server you're talking about?Edited By Olivier Leroux on 11/04/09 01:44 |

I want to build because I love the in game mechanics of NWN, and have been inspire by some action servers in the past and want to build something straightforward but challenging with lots of replay and easy expandability.
I want to build because every time I play some RPG or MMO I always think about certain game mechanics I would love to see, and by building I would get to implement those mechanics. |

I don't think the issue is whether it is still relevent to build but rather the fact that populating a new mod is difficult. I spent years building one only to be walking around it 80% of the time alone. |

I guess if worse comes to worst I can just release my mod on the vault. I wasn't looking to host a huge server, maybe 16-20 people, so the starting player base would have largely to do with how much advertising I do. |

You know, I almost made that suggestion. But, then, I don't play PW or multiplayer much at all, so of course that would be my first thought.

If you build it without cep or haks (maybe just with the top content) I will surely play on your server. |

I thought CEP was almost a requirement for servers nowadays. I have it imported into my mod but its only top content and basics, for place-ables mostly. |

Sure is still worth it to build because if you enjoy doing it, it's still worth it.

If you build because you enjoy building, it sure is! I've been working on a module for a few years now, most of that time going into the nuts and bolts of making it the module "I" want to play.
I've scrapped three different versions so far, taking the best of what they had and rolling it into the next. Not sure I'll ever "finish it", but just being able to do things in the current version that weren't possible in the last keep me happily chugging along. I'm scratching my itch and having a good time doing it, what more can I ask for! _________________ After four hours you'd have thought the compiler would have known that the zero was really a capital o in drag. |

Thanks everyone for the motivational kick in the pants! I've got some work done in the toolset over the weekend, mostly just base scripting and a few areas, and now I'm reading to go full board this week!
I suppose the idea is 'as long as I'm enjoying myself, there's no such thing as waste', although I'm going to try like a madman to promote my mod and server when I go public~ |
