Hello! I'm kinda new to NWN. I picked up the Diamond Ed. awhile back and played through the OC with a tank fighter, had a LOT of fun. Now I'd like to play a guy through SoU and HotU and love the idea of a fighter/rogue/assassin. What would be the best course for level allocation for a character like this? I've done a litle research and it seems that which class you take and when is crucial for a solid build, in regards to feats, bonus feats, "skill dumps" etc. Any advice would be great! Thanks all:)

Welcome aboard, AngusFang!

Although I've never tried this particular build combo in SoU, there are a few points that could help in your cause. (Note that my comments are based more on playing SoU than any impact HotU may pose.)

Keep in mind that your ending char level (total) will be in the 13 to 14 range, give or take. Which means a triple multiclass may be weaker than one with fewer classes only because there is a relatively short period in which to develop the respective strengths of each (aside from skill dumps, that is).

I suppose my main concern would be if you were intending to go a heavy fighter/armor STR route or a stealthy rogue/assassin DEX tumble path.

With assassin you will need a high INT level to succeed in death attack (IMO, the main reason to take assassin). However, DA DOES stack with sneaks so that is good. I am assuming (possibly incorrectly! ) that you are using the rogue levels to qualify for Asn as soon as possible. Otherwise, the rogue trap skills may come in handy, although there are henches available in SoU with excellent trap skills themselves. (Both stealth classes get UMD so that's not an issue.)

Fighter is probably a good base class since you will be getting feats on a regular basis and THAT is always welcome in abbreviated modules (do not construe this as a knock on SoU, it's just a stated fact).

The other factor is whether you intend to continue this same character in HotU. That could affect how you decide to take levels in SoU since, for example, you may want to maximize BAB with more fighter levels in anticipation of the final effectiveness in the subsequent expansion.

I hope this helps a bit and perhaps will prompt other forum members to suggest tips based on their own experience with this sort of combo. Don't be afraid to experiment. That's at least half the fun!

Cheers!

P.S. a sample Ftr/Rog/Asn build

I like the idea of a fighter based assassin, but with a strong DEX so he's not the clunky type (think Artemis Entreri I guess?) I also was thinking that I'd probably play most of SoU as a fighter/rogue,(9/3?) and then go rogue and assassin in HotU, maybe throwing in a couple fighter levels at the end? I'll play around with it a little, that IS the fun of this:) Thanks for the response!

Welcome to the SoU forum

Maybe consider going lawful and switch those 3 rogue levels for another natural dexer like a monk?

The reasons would be to gain cleave, better fort & will saves, extra speed and slightly higher HPs. What you give up are early trap skills, higher overall skill pts, 2d6 sneaks, early UMD & uncanny dodge. However, assassin gets all rogue class skills except parry and also gets the same uncanny dodge feat(s). Hide & move silently are both monk skills so you will qualify for assassin just as fast as rogue. Evasion is common to both rogue and monk.

So depending on how long you want to delay taking assassin levels, you will be able to generate a similar skill set.

Of course, if you are intent on developing trap skills early or just like the RP aspect of that combination, monk won't service your needs.

I suppose it's the duplication of early rogue and assassin feats that bothers me about the ftr/rogue/assn setup. But if you plan on epic rogue (rather than epic assassin), then it makes sense and in that case you will need to take a lot more rogue levels pre-epic.

Some things to consider anyway...

That is true, but a solid build is not crucial for the campaigns. It's up to you how much time you want to spend planning your build versus how much time you want to spend playing the campaigns. (If you enjoy planning then go for it, but if you'd rather be playing the game then just jump right in with your current idea.)

Funny you say that, because as I finally got tired of plotting and planning and realized just wanna start playing! As it turns out, I dropped the idea of the assassin... playing a rogue, got about 6 levels now, and going to start throwing in some fighter levels too...

Thanks for the responses people! I actually took another swing at the OC with the above mentioned rogue, so I guess I'll speak to you again over there! Thx again:)
