New Races Available In The CEP

Brownie portraitTired of tripping over your beard in every adventure as a dwarf? Looking to play something that can arm wrestle a half-orc, play footsie with an elf, and disembowel a zombie all at the same time? Ever want to kick a halfling in the shins and make him look down at you? If so, it sounds like you need a change of pace... er... a change of race.

The Community Expansion Project (CEP) offers two new races for your playing enjoyment: the wemic and the brownie. In this week's profile, we feature the small and mighty brownie race where you'll find some interesting information about brownies, bic character file downloads for fast brownie PC creation, and some easy character customisation instructions.

Small and Mighty: The Brownies

It's a flying carpet--honest!Brownies are sometimes said to be distant relatives of halfings (perhaps half halfing, half pixie) but they are smaller and far less common. Whatever their origin - whether a mixed breed or a type of fey all to their own - brownies are generally friendly to humans and their ilk. However, they are very shy and seldom allow themselves to be seen. The fact that they have exceptional senses in general and are never surprised helps them to accomplish this goal.

Brownies appear as small elves roughly one and a half feet tall. They favour brightly colored garments.

Brownies tend to prefer quiet, pastoral areas. They are sometimes said to inhabit houses or barns, and in return, they help the owners out with household tasks - making or repairing small items of leather, metal, or wood, for example. In keeping with their shyness, they only work at night, perhaps in exchange for small gifts or food. They are easily offended, however, and will abandon a house if their gifts are called payments or if they are offered gifts of clothing (no matter how shabby their own clothes are).

Do not underestimate brownies in combatIf encountered on friendly terms, brownies can often be convinced to help lawful characters. Brownies do not usually carry weapons other than short swords. They have a number of special powers including the ability to cause Confusion and employ other spells of distraction or misleading.

Brownies were originally part of the 1st edition "AD&D Monster Manual" where they were familiars for especially lucky Lawful Good characters; an unofficial translation of the brownie to 3rd edition rules can be found at Scott Greene's Creature Catalogue (http://www.enworld.org/cc/index.php).

Brownies: Small. Shy. And still able to take down a dragon.

With the introduction of the CEP, we have had a lot of people ask how to use the two new races as player characters (PCs). You asked for it, you've got it. Brownie Installation And Customisation Instructions

To use these characters:

  1. Install the character files by saving the .bic files to your localvault directory of your NWN game installation.
  2. Start a new CEP module. (Note: these characters only work in CEP modules. For free, top-rated CEP modules, visit the NWVault Top CEP Modules CEP page.)
  3. Click on "Select Premade Character."
  4. In the "Choose Available Character" dialog, select the appropriate character for the race, gender, and class you want.
  5. Click on "Customize Character."
  6. Change your character's portrait on the "Select Available Portrait for your Character" dialog.
  7. Change your character's phenotype, head and tattoo models, etc. on the "Select the Appearance of your Character" dialog. (Hint: if you change the wemic phenotype you actually get a different fur color; gold instead of tawny).
  8. Change your character's name, voiceset, and other details on the "Character Information" dialog.

Modifying Alignment

Alignment is a special case, so we created a tiny one-room module that will change your alignment to whatever you want through dialogue choices. If you want to change the alignment of your character, make the first module you load your new character into the module CEP Alignment Changer (inluded in the character download file). Once inside, talk to the friendly cave goblin, Harumph. He will change your alignment to anything you ask for and will then save a copy of your character to the vault for you. Next time you load a module, use this new copy for your completely customized character.

That's all there is to it. Time to get out there and show the world that the movers and shakers in life aren't always elves, humans, halflings, gnomes, dwarves, half-orcs, or half-elves. Adventure awaits!
