New Races Available In The CEP

Wemic portraitTired of tripping over your beard in every adventure as a dwarf? Looking to play something that can arm wrestle a half-orc, play footsie with an elf, and disembowel a zombie all at the same time? Ever want to kick a halfling in the shins and make him look down at you? If so, it sounds like you need a change of pace... er... a change of race.

The Community Expansion Project (CEP) offers two new races for your playing enjoyment: the wemic and the brownie. In this week's profile, we feature the majestic wemic race where you'll find some interesting information about wemics, bic character file downloads for fast wemic PC creation, and some easy wemic customisation instructions.

The Majestic Wemics

Whatever deep roots lie beneath the origins of centaurs, it is clear that horses are not the only creatures to embody the essence of what it is to be both man and animal. Fierce hunters that roam the plains, wemics share the upper body of a humanoid with the lower body of a lion. The result is imposing—man's cunning and intelligence combined with the speed, strength, and ferocity of the king of beasts. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that wemics are excellent hunters and fighters. They sometimes hire out as trackers or guides.

Wemics on the plainsLike all creatures, wemics vary in shape and size. From head to rump, they are 10 to 12 feet long and stand 6 to 7 feet at the shoulder. Their entire bodies are covered in a dusky fur, often golden in colour, with a white underbelly. Adult males have a mane of long hair kept in various styles. A wemic's face is a mixture of human and feline features with cat-slitted pupils, high-set ears, and often a broad, leonine nose. They are fast and can leap tremendous distances.

Wemic civilization is simpler than that of their human brethren, and this tendency is only reinforced by their nomadic nature. They do not settle in permanent homes. Instead, wemics migrate with the herds they hunt for food. They live and hunt in small groups called prides. A number of prides often band together into a tribe that is led by a chief. They have a rich tradition of oral history Wemic in deadly combatfor maintaining and passing on tribal lore. Not surprisingly, with this type of society the favoured class of a Wemic is a barbarian. Wemics fight with both their forepaws and a weapon. Like most nomadic "hunter" societies, Wemics have not developed the arts and technologies required for refining or smithing metals. Consequently, they usually wield clubs, stone-tipped javelins, and swords when they can get them. They sometimes carry painted leather shields in their off-hand.

Wemics originally entered the D&D game in the 1st edition; they can be found in the 3rd edition sourcebook, Monsters of Faerun.

With the introduction of the CEP, we have had a lot of people ask how to use the two new races as player characters (PCs). You asked for it, you've got it. Here, to make your life easier, we present "Races of the Community Expansion Pack" part one. This package contains 22 new wemic character files ready for play. And you can customize them too!

The following PCs are included in the Races of the Community Expansion Pack part one (Wemics) file:

Wemic Installation And Customisation Instructions

Don't think that every male wemic barbarian has to be named Chkar and sport the same hair style, fur color, and portrait. You can customize your character to your heart's content.

To use these characters:

  1. Install the character files by saving the .bic files to your localvault directory of your NWN game installation.
  2. Start a new CEP module. (Note: these characters only work in CEP modules. For free, top-rated CEP modules, visit the NWVault Top CEP Modules CEP page.)
  3. Click on "Select Premade Character."
  4. In the "Choose Available Character" dialog, select the appropriate character for the race, gender, and class you want.
  5. Click on "Customize Character."
  6. Change your character's portrait on the "Select Available Portrait for your Character" dialog.
  7. Change your character's phenotype, head and tattoo models, etc. on the "Select the Appearance of your Character" dialog. (Hint: if you change the wemic phenotype you actually get a different fur color; gold instead of tawny).
  8. Change your character's name, voiceset, and other details on the "Character Information" dialog.

Modifying Alignment

Alignment is a special case, so we created a tiny one-room module that will change your alignment to whatever you want through dialogue choices. If you want to change the alignment of your character, make the first module you load your new character into the module CEP Alignment Changer (inluded in the character download file). Once inside, talk to the friendly cave goblin, Harumph. He will change your alignment to anything you ask for and will then save a copy of your character to the vault for you. Next time you load a module, use this new copy for your completely customized character.

That's all there is to it. Time to get out there and show the world that the movers and shakers in life aren't always elves, humans, halflings, gnomes, dwarves, half-orcs, or half-elves. Adventure awaits!
