Chapter One Guide - Part 3 Go to Page (Previous Page - Index, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 - Next Page) The Peninsula DistrictThe streets are filled with escaped prisoners rioting and looting. Captain Kipp, stationed near the entrance, explains that there are rumors that Head Gaoler Alaefin may have deliberately set the prisoners free. This confuses him because Alaefin is known to be a loyal and competent man.
You will be assaulted by a number of prisoners with a variety of weapons everywhere in this district. The prisoners may yell something about Alaefin giving them a good price for your head. Things do not look good for Alaefin at this point. The PrisonThere are two routes into the prison. The first path is a secret underground passage from the Tanglewood estate, which lies at the extreme West of the map. The second path is simply unlocking the front door to the prison with the Prison Key, which is obtained from the second Gang Leader beneath the city in the Sewer Access location. The Gang Leader protecting the entrance to the Sewers and the second Gang Leader with the Prison Key are very tough opponents. Come prepared. The easier path is through the Tanglewood Estates passage. To gain access to the Tanglewood Estate, search under the mat at the front door to obtain the door key. The underground passage through Tanglewood has a few new monsters to deal with (Giant Spiders, Stink Beetles) so be sure to have a level or two under your belt before tackling this route. Going down the passageway to the left of the front door, you will move into an underground passageway leading to a huge chessboard. Move carefully on the chessboard as it contains a great deal of traps. There is a closed portcullis at the far end of the cavern across another bridge. The first of the prison levels is beyond the portcullis.
Once you gain entrance to the prison you will encounter many escaped prisoners. One of the last surviving guards you might run into is Emernik. He tells you a story of horror about the Head Gaoler torturing his fellow guards and opening their skulls. He also tells you about Kurdan Fenkt, a half-orc prisoner that seems to be Alaefin’s right hand man in this operation. Emernik is a font of information about the prison and can direct you to rooms with extra supplies. There are three levels of the prison: Prison Main level, Prison Containment Level, and the Prison Pits where the Head Gaoler awaits. Beware of the tougher prisoners and a powerful escaped sorcerer located at the end of Prison Containment Level before heading down the stairs to the Pits. The PitsUpon arriving at the Pits, and negotiating the maze of tunnels, you overhear part of a conversation that confirms that the Head Gaoler and Kurdan Fenkt are working together. Kurdan Fenkt will attack, but will surrender if enough damage is done to him. Once he is defeated, you should prepare yourself for the final battle with the Head Gaoler. You quickly discover that the Head Gaoler was not bribed, or corrupted in some way, but is actually under the thrall of the hideous Intellect Devourer. The Intellect Devourer is, of course, one of the escaped creatures you are looking for.
The Intellect Devourer will make its final stand by possessing hapless guards and forcing them to fight to their death. When you kill one guard, the Devourer will jump to another guard. If you talk to the guards before the fight starts, you can try and convince them to leave, so there will be less of them to fight. You will see the Devourer only briefly as it runs to the next victim to possess. Eventually it will run out of people to possess, and turn and fight for it’s own life. You need his brain for the cure. Head back to Sedos Sabile and she will reward you. Take the whole works back to Aribeth for a larger reward and brownie points.
