The Blacklake District

Initially, you do not have direct access to the Blacklake District. You must travel through a No-Man’s-Land of burning buildings, diseased thugs and mad dogs.

Cendran, the man at the gate, will speak of extracting revenge on a local tough named Loxar who has made himself the leader of this hellish section of the city. Find and kill Loxar and return with his head to Cendran. This is not a critical path quest but you will probably run into Loxar at some point if you travel through this barren section of town more than once.

The Blacklake District itself is a very pleasant, clean, well-kept area simmering with tension. It is quite easy to learn that a magic-using nobleman named Meldanen is hording what’s left of the food supply by keeping it behind locked doors in his personal warehouse. Meldanen is known for conducting experiments, and has not been seen in public recently.

Meldanen’s Estate

There are two ways into Meldanen’s estate to investigate: the front door, and finding Milly, the oddly alluring laundry women.

The guard at the front door, Orrean, is open to all sorts of corruption, be it persuasion or bribery, to gain entrance to the estate. You may choose to fight him, but you will be attacked by several well-armed guards in retaliation. You will find the Meldanen Estate Key on his remains if you survive the encounter.

The other way to get into the estate is to track down Milly. She will be walking around the Blacklake District in a bit of a hurry. If you are able to persuade her, she will spin a tale of scandalous behavior with a much younger Meldanen and a, presumably, saucier Milly. The end result is a secret portal that Meldanen had installed in her humble home so that she could steal into the estate without anyone being aware. She will give you a key to allow the you to gain access to her home and use of the magic portal.

Once inside the estate, you need to either persuade Grommin, the inner guard to open the door or take his key from his dead body. Go West to get to the next floor. There are quite a few traps throughout the house so move carefully. The creatures you will encounter are imps, mephits and finally Meldanen’s Apprentice (a level 5 Sorcerer).

In Meldanen’s Inner Sanctum you must speak to the Dryad before Meldanen (level 8 Sorcerer) himself will appear. He will surrender if he receives enough damage. It is up to the player to decide if he is killed or allowed to flee. The player can extract the key to his warehouse full of food and give it to Formosa, a local rabble-rouser, to open the stores for the starving masses.

Freeing (or killing) the Dryad will gain you a lock of her hair to use in the cure for the plague.

Bring the whole works back to Aribeth for your just reward.
