Q: Do you have any advice for people who are interested in getting into multiplayer NWN but are a little confused about how to go about it?

In answer to this question, well you know the saying--"you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you meet the prince". That's one way to do it. For me the greatest blessing was finding a site called Neverwinter Connections. I joined about the second week of September, mainly due to problems that I was having going online games without having a direct connect IP address. What a blessing that problem proved to be. It is the best match making service ever, one can sign up, preview games, and DM's via the ratings system mentioned above. I know many are thrown by the application and invite-only labels. Certainly as a new comer I was. My single best piece of advice, do not let that stop you. You would be so surprised at how many times you will get into a game. Especially effective is to agree to be an alternate, as so often something happens and you are in.

Do your homework. Find out the top ranked persistent worlds. I know that NW Connections carries a list of the top 10 or so. Check the official boards all the time, checking for DM's looking for players, check the guilds, see which appeal to you and join them. Once you do join, participate, take the time to post. I recently joined the persistent world A Land Far Away (ALFA). When I first heard of it, they were not taking new members. I persisted and checked back every single day, and posted a bit, until the day they opened applications again. I applied and was immediately accepted, no wait at all. The key was not giving up. The same goes for NW Connections; yes you will get turned down (I still do) for some games but you will also get accepted to a lot more than you thought you could get accepted to. Build your reputation as a good role player.

The second piece of advice in this respect; your most enjoyable games are going to be those that are ongoing from week to week, with the same group of people. The best, in my opinion are those that are DM run, with server-stored characters. It is these kind of games that help you to build a history, and encourage role-playing to go to deeper levels, much as friendships in real life. Now how can I make this happen you ask?

Two ways mainly. Join a guild, next look for games where the DM is not running a module so much as continuing, ongoing campaign set in some world or another. I am happy to say I now have one for every night of the week, but it took me a couple of months to get there. The Salmoth Chronicles, World of Nuarrana, Iskvellian Isles, Dragonspire, and World of Morgannon. Look, look, look. Of these games, World of Morgannon is run through the official boards, and Iskvellian Isles by a lone DM in no way connected at all to any site but I did find him when he posted a query looking for players at the official site. Your best bet as far as the "world" type games and persistent worlds, such as Ameryth Shiela, only pick those that are DM run, otherwise it really is not much fun.

Right here in this very article I will post two continuous ongoing campaign worlds, both with the DM's permission which anyone reading this article can check out, apply to and, if approved, play in.

The first is my beloved Dragonspire. Currently hanshoo has about sixteen players and wants up to 24 full time players. There are currently 3 separate groups, with plans for a fourth group once maximum is hit. Each group have their own quests and own stories and histories. Entering low level players are placed into the appropriate group and progress accordingly, while mid and high-level groups have their own stories. You play with the same folks game after game. However, as with all games, part of your role-playing comes from creating the opportunity for yourself. Yes you have group quests but effort must be put for by the individual player to make his/her own unique space. This game is co DMed by hahshoo and biocyde13, ( number 3 and 5th ranked DM at nwn connections ) and they are so very skillful at using NPC's to role play, and as well, bend over backwards to make things happen to individual PC's, but the PC is the one that must make that happen. The web site address to get information and apply for one of those spots is : http://www.hahns.tv/Dragonspire

An even better chance right now is a new world being run by one of the co DM's of Dragonspire, Biocyde13 (5th rank DM at NW Connections). Why is this a better chance? Biocyde has been hard at work on this world, and is in the final stages of a beta, so everyone starting out there will be new. If you want a chance to be in on the ground floor, well this is it. His site, if you want to check out and apply for it is www.midreach.com and his server is up on the multiplayer list of servers under the catagory, 'Roleplay'. Both servers are heavily DM run, supervised, nonrole-players are banned, each has a player administrator system set up so that each group that plays is lead by an admin who helps the DM in leading the plot along.

So there you go. Any of you looking for a place to start, there is a place to start that I can personally vouch for as quality role-play.
