NWCON 3: Con of the Dead!
NWCON 3: Con of the Dead!
Profile by Jay Watamaniuk
Start the New Year with a little flesh-consuming horror from the damned! Lead Coordinator Danebo gears up for the next huge Neverwinter Nights online convention filled with special events, contests, and of course, games of spleen-spasming terror in the name of wholesome fun. Organizers Danebo, Festivus, J'Dai, and even grizzled con vetern Eliandi gave us the details.
When is it and where do I go to learn more?
Danebo: NWCON 3: Con of the Dead is being held Wednesday, January 26th, 2005 to Sunday, January 30th, 2005. You can learn all about it over in the General Forums at Neverwinterconnections.com.
Jay: Interested gamers can also check out our NWCON3 posted schedule of events.
So you're a new organizer of this event. How did that occur?
Danebo: The last two and half CONS drove Phil Elmore/Eliandi crazy! I took pity on him and said I would undertake it this time around. ;) Hopefully he will be recovered in time to take on NWCON 3.5 or NWCON 4. Actually, Phil was asking for people to volunteer and I stepped forward. Phil worked very hard on the previous CONS and had very little time to participate in them as he was running around behind the scenes during the CONS to make sure things were going well. This time around he chose to just assist rather than take on the duties of the Lead Coordinator.
Festivus: I was shanghaied...actually, it seemed that since I had revised the convention hall for NWCON 2.5 I was the logical choice for NWCON3's convention hall. I don't mind "volunteering" for this effort, it seems that NWN has some serious legs and continues to run quite well.
Eliandi: <gimps up using a withered staff> Can't you see I'm retired! OK, not all-the-way retired, but certainly NWCON Organizer-emeritus. That means I get to basically do what I want while giving unwanted and unnecessary advice to everyone else. Anyway, I've known Danebo for a heck of a long time and know he is dedicated to putting on a good show. Plus he has a great support team. OK, I've talked enough, time for a pint. <gimps off to the pub>.
What has been your involvement with the NW community in the past?
Danebo: I have participated in one form or another in all of the NWCONs. When not doing con work, I run pen and paper style games on a regular basis using modules created with the toolset. I concentrate solely on converting pen and paper modules. I feel that by doing so players unfamiliar with them can experience the wonderful adventures created by the original authors.
Festivus: My servers hosted NWCON 2 and I helped out and hung out for NWCON 2.5. I have DMed numerous sessions and played in a few less than I have DMed, although the holidays and prepping for NWCON 3 took me away from my love of DMing / roleplaying.
J'dai:
- Helped with NWCON (Question Taker)
- Coordinator of the IRC Seminars for NWCON 2
- Helped with NWCON 2.5 (Moderator-PRC Chat)
- Module Review Administrative Assistant, NWVault
- Forum Moderator, Neverwinter Connections
Any special reason why it's called the 'Con of the Dead'?
Danebo: Like anything that has been around for a number of years, it sometimes needs to be refreshed. NWCON is now over 2 years old and I felt that a theme would brighten it up. Being a die-hard fan of gothic horror modules (which my players seemed to enjoy), I thought a horror themed con would be just the thing to add some pizzazz. It also allowed for some new ideas and events for players to see and experience when they attend NWCON 3. It should be noted that anyone can still run any type of module they want and still be part of the con. We do want something for everyone.
Festivus: There was talk of having a themed convention...and it took off from there. In fact, the NWCON 3 convention hall took to heart the horror theme. There are many little surprises that await those who visit. Many modules offered will be along the darker side thematically.
What can fans expect with this con?
Danebo: We have a brand spanking new Convention Center, done up by Festivus. He has lots of spooky tricks to surprise people with in it. Plus, he has made it spooky and mysterious. People will have great fun exploring all the areas in it. Also new this year are the competitions. We have a ghost story competition, a DM competition, a Module Demonstration Competition, and a Screenshot Art Competition. We felt that the module builders were overlooked in the previous cons and the last two mentioned competitions are a way of showing off their hard work. Another new event will be the MEET THE DM social event that will provide opportunity for DMs and players to interact with each other in the hopes of matching up game style preferences. Of course, we will also have the usual plethora of Seminars and Games for people to get involved in. Also new are the ROUND TABLE Discussions that will be taking place throughout the con. We hope people will come out and participate in them.
Festivus: Storytelling around a campfire while roasting marshmallows and weenies, chatting over a pint in the inn, meet new players or Dungeon Masters looking for players, demonstrations, creepy modules hosted by sick and twisted Dungeon Masters...who could ask for anything more?
