Neverwinter Nights Wiki

Profile by Jay Watamaniuk

NWN WikiNeverwinter Nights is a huge game with about a trillion moving parts spinning in complicated, math-bloated ways that strike a cold mushy fear into the hearts of even the most dedicated Dungeons & Dragons fans. Alec Usticke, famed founder of the massive Bastions of War clan guild, may have a found a solution for presenting all that information about Neverwinter Nights in a format that is easy to navigate and allows input from any fans anywhere: the wiki.

What is the address for the NWNWiki?

http://www.nwnwiki.org/

What is a 'wiki'?

Alec: A wiki is a database that anyone can edit: it's a repository of information that is collaboratively written. The most famous wiki is Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia.

A wiki is a powerful tool, yet it's very easy to use -- for both readers and contributors.

Why start an NWN wiki?

Alec: NWNWiki originally started as a reference site for my Bastions of War server. However, we added so much basic NWN information that we quickly realized it would be an excellent resource for the entire NWN community. So, we ditched the BoW specific details and opened it up to everyone.

NWN WikiIt's a great extension to the other NWN resources out there, such as the BioWare forums. How many times has a player asked for an explanation of the multiclass XP penalties or when their character gets Epic bonus feats? Well, now they can just look it up on NWNWiki: Epic Bonus Feats.

But looking up information only skims the surface of a wiki's true power, because anyone can contribute and improve any page. Not happy with the bonus feat explanation or have a tip for other players? Click the Edit button and change it on the spot!

What are the security implications of allowing anyone to edit the website? Does it work?

Alec: Believe it or not, it works amazingly well. Sure, we get a vandal or a spammer every once in a while, but it's surprisingly rare and they're easily dealt with (revert their edits, ban 'em). The flexibility of a wiki means anyone can fix a bad edit, and luckily the good guys outnumber the bad.

How are the submissions going?

Alec: Very well. We already have over 800 articles, and we're just getting started. We have every class, race, spells, feat, and skill covered and a lot of info on basic game rules. Of course, all those articles are still open for improvement. People are adding tips and tricks, which can be very helpful beyond the basics.

Are there any areas that need more submissions?

NWN WikiAlec: Beyond the basic NWN rules, I'd like to see the wiki expand to include details on the Official Campaigns, Premium Modules, community-created modules, persistent worlds, and other online servers. NWN is such a versatile game and the community is huge, so there are endless subjects for which NWNWiki can be a reference. It will expand into any area that a contributor decides to work on.

How do I submit content to be added to the wiki?

Alec: That's the beauty of a wiki. It's so easy!

Anyone can improve a page just by clicking the Edit button, changing or expanding the existing text, and then clicking save. Want to try it? Check out the Sandbox, which is a test page for anyone to practice editing.

Further, every page has a discussion tab, so if you'd like to make a suggestion or ask a question, you can post there and it won't affect the regular page.

You don't even need to be a registered NWNWiki user to make an edit, but if you plan on becoming a regular contributor, I'd suggest you create a free account. That way you can add pages to your watch list and use other features. All registered users also get a discussion page, so you can leave messages for others.

If I have questions who can I contact?

Alec: As mentioned above, if you have a question about a particular page, leave a message on that article's discussion page. Other users will respond or run with your idea. There's also a discussion page for the entire wiki and for general questions and suggestions: NWNWiki Talk: Community Portal.

Many users put their email and IM addresses on their user pages and the sysops are always happy to help. My user page lists my email address, but you can also post a message on my discussion page if you need help.

I hope people stop by www.nwnwiki.org and check it out. Better yet, I hope they're not shy about clicking the Edit link and making an improvement to this great community resource.
