Well…yes, it's a giant chicken. To make this oversized dire poultry even remotely scary I need you to get in touch with your guileless inner child that believed in such things as unicorns, the tooth fairy and that spray-on tanning was healthy.

The Cockatrice is about the size of a large turkey with bat wings and probably gets more flak than the platypus for sheer weirdness. So if you can imagine a large, angry chicken that comes waddling out of the darkness making some strange grunting noises you might get a little freaked out despite thinking that chickens are about as dangerous as sharpened celery.
