1.01: NWN Diamond Edition failing disk check. (Back to Top)

Something was changed in the NWN Diamond install package after we created it and before it went to manufacturing. One or more key files were altered. Please accept our deepest apologies if this issue has affected you in any way. PLEASE run the NWNEnglish1.66HotUUpdate.exe program on the DVD. This will replace the defective nwmain.exe file with the proper one. If you do not do this, you will not be able to automatically update the game to the future 1.67 update, nor will you be able to roll back to a previous version. Once again we extend our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

1.02: Premium Modules in the "Kingmaker Retail Adventure Pack" or "Neverwinter Nights: Diamond Edition" failing offline authentication process. (Back to Top)

There is a very rare issue where the Premium Neverwinter Nights Modules included in the "Kingmaker Adventure Pack" and "Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition" will fail the offline authentication process due to an installation error.

The retail versions of the Premium NWN modules make use of license files to manage the offline authentication process. Please attempt to locate the "premium" folder in your root NWN directory. (Usually "C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN\Premium") within the Premium folder you should see three files as follows:

Neverwinter Nights - Kingmaker.dat

Neverwinter Nights - ShadowGuard.dat

Neverwinter Nights - Witch's Wake.dat

If any of these files are missing you will need to back up your saved games and characters and then uninstall and reinstall the Premium NWN Modules included in the adventure pack. If you have "Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition" you will need to uninstall and reinstall the entire package.

1.03: Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition Missing Cd-keys. (North America only) (Back to Top)

A recent run of Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition intended for sale in North America was shipped without CD-Keys. Atari, the publisher of the Neverwinter Nights series, has investigated and resolved the issue with the manufacturer and will be providing replacement CD-Keys for any North American customers affected by this issue. We have recently confirmed the replacement process.

For best results please contact Atari Support with the following information:

  • Customer Name
  • E-mail Address
  • Phone Number
  • Physical Address
  • Digital photo attachment for product manual showing blank CD-key information.

Atari Customer Support will then issue a replacement CD-key via E-mail.

Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience.

1.04: Compatible refresh rate not being detected for high resolutions (Back to Top)

The game may try to set your refresh rate to an invalid value when you change resolutions through the Config utility or through the ingame menus. If this happens, you can manually set your refresh rate by editing the nwn.ini file. Open the file in notepad and look for the [Display Options] section. You should find a line that reads:

RefreshRate=

Ensure the number after the = is a valid refresh rate (if you aren't sure, 60 should be safe).

1.05: Texture Pack Compatibility Mode (Back to Top)

This mode is currently unstable. You may experience problems when using the 16 meg (compatibility mode) textures. To avoid any possible problems, pick the regular 16 meg texture pack. This has been fixed in the latest patch

1.06: Inventory bags and plot specific items (Back to Top)

If you drag plot specific items from a container directly to an inventory bag, the game may not realize you've obtained the item. You should rearrange objects in your main inventory for the new item, put it on the ground, and pick it up into your main inventory. Once this has been done, you can put them into a container if you'd like. This has been fixed in the latest patch.

1.07: Desktop color depth must be 32 bit (Back to Top)

Access the display properties either through Control Panel or by right clicking the desktop and choosing properties. Under the settings tab, ensure True Color (32 bit) is chosen.

1.08: Software firewalls (Zone Alarm, Norton Personal Firewall, etc) (Back to Top)

Keep in mind you must allow Neverwinter Nights to act as a server and access the internet. For other information on playing through a firewall, check the Technical FAQ

1.09: Not detecting the Play Disc (Back to Top)

The game uses CD copy protection. This type of protection occasionally has incompatibility issues with certain CD and DVD drives. If you are experiencing difficulties with launching the game post-install, try rebooting your computer and try running the executable again - this seems to work in the majority of cases.

1.10: Problems running the game with 3DFX cards (Back to Top)

3DFX is no longer in business; although some Voodoo 5 cards may work occasionally they are no longer supported by 3DFX and available drivers do not generally include complete OpenGL support required for Neverwinter Nights. Hence, 3DFX graphics cards are not supported by NWN.

1.11: Movie player and Windows 98 and Windows ME (Back to Top)

The movie player may not work properly under Windows 98 or Windows ME with certain video cards. Updated drivers may help.

If you are having slow movie playback under Windows 98 or Windows ME you can edit the "SafeMovie=1" entry in your nwn.ini file to "SafeMovie=0" - this will improve playback speed in-game but may introduce problems where the sound plays but the movies visuals do not. We mention this purely as an option for the advanced user.

1.12: Minimizing while saving/loading (Back to Top)

The game may become unstable if you Alt-Tab while loading or saving a game.

1.13: WindowsXP and OpenGL (Back to Top)

The default video drivers provided with Windows XP do not have robust Open GL support. Upgrade your drivers if you have Windows XP as soon as possible.

1.14: WindowsXP and Soundblaster Live (Back to Top)

Sounds may not play correctly or the game may crash under Windows XP if you are using the default drivers for the Creative Labs Soundblaster Live Cards. Please upgrade your drivers as soon as possible.

1.15: Internet Multiplayer Server Selection / Chat Area (Back to Top)

To avoid any possible problems when on the internet multiplayer server selection screen / chat area, leave the following filters unchecked:

- Hide Local Vault
- Hide Server Vault
- Hide Password Protected

This has been fixed in the latest patch

1.16: Update program not detecting internet connection (Back to Top)

If the Updater program says that it does not detect an internet connection, and you know that you are connected, turn on dedicated internet connection following these steps:

- From the NWN Launcher select 'Configuration'
- click on 'Change'
- select 'Dedicated Internet Connection'
- click 'OK'
- click 'Accept'
- Now that you are back at the NWN Launcher, click 'Update'

1.17: DirectX 8.1 SDK with Debug .dlls (Back to Top)

If you have the DirectX 8.1 SDK (Software Development Kit) installed, you will want to revert to the non SDK version of DirectX 8.1

1.18: Installing the game to the root of a drive (Back to Top)

When you are uninstalling the game, you must read the prompts very carefully, as the uninstaller gives you an option to remove any files it finds in your Neverwinter Nights folder. This is so you can remove any custom content that the uninstaller wouldn't know about. If you have installed the game to the root of your hard drive (like C:\ instead of C:\Neverwinter), when you uninstall the game, you could be telling it to delete all files from C:\

We recommend that you never install any program directly to the root of any drive. Using subdirectories is the accepted practice.

1.19: ERROR! Uninstall encountered an error and cannot proceed. Please contact technical support. (Back to Top)

This means the information that keeps track of where the game was installed has been changed and Installshield thinks the game is installed somewhere that you probably don't want to delete. You can follow the Manual Uninstall instructions from our Technical FAQ if this happens to you.

1.20: ZipMagic and problems patching (Back to Top)

If you are getting the following error message when trying to update/patch your game:

Can not find patch file:
temp\...zip
The patch has been aborted

This can happen if you are running a program called ZipMagic on your system. Try turning off ZipMagic and running the updater again.

1.21: Neverwinter Configuration tool not detecting very new CPUs (Back to Top)

If you have a 2.2 ghz or higher CPU, the Config Tool may not find the right information in regards to the speed. If it reports your CPU can't handle the game, you can adjust the settings to what you'd like to use.

1.22: Missing text on buttons or missing in game dialog (Back to Top)

If there is missing text on buttons such as on the game launcher, or the text is missing during in game dialog, your dialog.tlk file may have been corrupted. Until we can investigate the problem further, you can download a replacement dialog.tlk file that matches your game version:

- dialog.tlk for NWN English 1.69 (zip file, 3.1 MB)

- dialog.tlk for NWN German 1.68 (zip file, 6.9 MB)

- dialog.tlk for NWN French 1.68 (zip file, 6.5 MB)

- dialog.tlk for NWN Italian 1.68 (zip file, 6.4 MB)

- dialog.tlk for NWN Spanish 1.68 (zip file, 6.4 MB)

- dialog.tlk for NWN Japanese 1.68 (zip file, 6.0 MB)

- dialog.tlk for NWN Korean 1.66 (zip file, 6.4 MB)

- dialog.tlk for NWN Polish 1.67 (zip file, 3.3 MB)

Unzip the dialog.tlk files into your Neverwinter Nights install directory, replacing the old files.

1.23: General Installation Troubleshooting (Back to Top)

If you are having trouble installing the game, try the following:

First, check the CDs for dirt or scratches. Sometimes a simple cleaning will do. Also, try to manually copy the contents of the CDs to your HD or try installing on another machine. These things will help pinpoint where the problem is.

Another known issue is that there is a conflict between the VIA chipset and certain SoundBlaster cards. If you are using a motherboard with a VIA chipset and have a SoundBlaster card, be sure to install the latest 4-in-1 drivers from VIA's site, as well as the latest drivers for your soundcard. If problems persist, you can physically remove the soundcard from your computer, install NeverWinter Nights, then replace you soundcard.

You could also try doing a minimum install, then upgrading it to a full install manually. Please read How do I manually upgrade a minimum install to a full install in our Technical FAQ for instructions.

1.24: Intellect Devourer not spawning at end of Prison Riot quest (Back to Top)

There have been two fixes for this issue in patches, but it still seems there is a case where the Intellect Devourer will not show up. After patching to version 1.23 or higher of Neverwinter Nights, you can use the following information to manually create the Devourer's Brain.

When in game, use the ` or ~ key to activate the command console. You should see a > in the upper left area of the screen. Then type the following and press enter (it is CaSe SeNSItive):

DebugMode 1

You should then enter DebugMode. Hit ` or ~ again, and type the following to create the brain (it is created wherever your cursor is so make sure it is not in the wall or anything):

dm_spawnitem M1Q2PlotReagent

After that is done, you can turn off DebugMode with:

DebugMode 0

1.25: CDs developing cracks from the inner ring (Back to Top)

Atari's policy states that replacement material will be offered for a period of 90 days from the date of purchase. Proof of purchase will be required. Outside of the 90 day period, replacement material will not be provided. To contact Atari Support, visit the following page:
Atari Support

1.26: Unable to enable Shiny Water when using an ATI Radeon card (Back to Top)

This option has been added in a game update. Please ensure you have updated both the game and your video drivers. Also, this option will only be available on the Radeon 8500 and higher.

1.27: Sir Karathis not in his cave after rescuing three boys (Back to Top)

During the Chapter2 quest to find the werewolf hunter, it has been reported that under certain circumstances, after finding the 3 boys, Neuriks dialog options do not appear to be correct regarding Sir Karathis and the Black Wolf, and there is no werewolf in the cave east of the Green Griffon Inn.

Head to the area just outside of the cave where Sir Karathis is supposed to be. Then, press ` or ~ to display the command console (a '>' in the upper left of your screen). Once you see that, type the following to enter DebugMode:

DebugMode 1

After hitting enter, you should see 'success'. Then you need to use the dm_runscript command twice to run the appropriate scripts. Press ` or ~ again and type the following one after the other:

dm_runscript m2q1a02nrkslc04
dm_runscript m2q1neurik001

Once those have been run, you can turn off DebugMode with:

DebugMode 0

Then, when you enter the cave, you should find Karathis and the quest should continue normally.

1.28: NPCs at pinnacle of Host Tower not responding (Back to Top)

If you have reached the pinnacle of the Host Tower, and the NPCs on the other side of the locked gate do not respond and do not run their in-game cutscene, the best way to continue is by running a particular script. First, press ` or ~ to display the command console in the upper left of the screen and then type the following to enter DebugMode:

DebugMode 1

Once you have done that, prepare for a fight, and then open the command console again and type the following:

dm_runscript 2q6k_startfight

NOTE: There is a single space between the dm_runscript command and the name of the script.

The gate should open, and the NPCs should attack you. Once they are disposed of, you can turn off DebugMode with:

DebugMode 0

Then, read your journal entry and use your Stone of Recall to report back to Aarin Gend and finish the chapter. Note: This issue has been fixed in the v1.64 patch

1.29: Crashes in Toolset while manipulating Creature and Item Properties (Back to Top)

Some video card and driver combinations have problems with multiple OpenGL windows that are used when editing Creature and Item Properties. If you experience crashes in the Toolset while doing this, try turning off environmental mapping. This can be done by going to the Tools menu in the Toolset, selecting Options, and then unchecking "Use environmental mapping on Creatures and Items". This solution is for any type of video card, but we have had more reports of this occuring on certain ATI video card and driver combinations.

1.30: Importing characters from the Baldur's Gate series (Back to Top)

Initially we had hoped to transfer Baldur's Gate characters over to the Neverwinter Nights game but after working with the completely different rules, engine, graphics and character attributes, we could not see any purpose to stripping an old character of all items (as Neverwinter Nights starts the player at first level), all experience, all additional level bonuses and leaving them with just their name. We decided against the ability to transfer characters.

1.31: "Stuttering" while playing (Back to Top)

Many different things may cause the game to "stutter" Lack of RAM, outdated video card drivers, not enough free HD space, etc. Please see this report at The Adrenaline Vault for some additional information on this issue.

1.32: Accessing console commands on a international keyboard (Back to Top)

To access the console, you would press ~ or ` on your keyboard. It seems on some international keyboards, this does not work as intended. You can still send console commands to the game by using the chat line (where talk appears). To do this, simply preface the command with ##.

For example, to enter DebugMode you would type the following into the chat window:

##DebugMode 1

1.33: Black Screen after choosing a character (or creating a new character) and clicking play (Back to Top)

One possible cause of this is if your computer has a corrupted "temp" folder in the Neverwinter Nights directory (or a file called "temp" with no file extension). Deleting the "temp" file/folder or renaming it should fix the problem.

1.34: Can not load any modules, with error message "Could not load the module. Could not unpack the module" (Back to Top)

One possible cause of this is if your computer has a corrupted "currentgame" folder in the Neverwinter Nights directory (or a file called "currentgame" with no file extension). Deleting the "currentgame" file/folder or renaming it should fix the problem.

1.35: [SoU Only] Important Notice Concerning Shadows of Undrentide CD Keys (Back to Top)

When you open your Shadows of Undrentide box, be sure to take note of a red piece of paper with black print. It contains your Shadows of Undrentide CD Key, which you will need to install the expansion pack. The game installer mentions that the CD Key is in the manual, but this is not the case.

Register your CD Key with the BioWare Community Site for easy retrieval, or write it somewhere you will not lose it.

You will need it each time you install Shadows of Undrentide. If you did not receive this piece of paper, please consult the technical support section of your manual to contact Atari. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

1.36: [SoU Only] I have Shadows of Undrentide installed, and I tried to open my henchmen's inventory in the original NWN Official Campaign. It says I can't do that. Why? (Back to Top)

Modules must be created with support for opening henchmen inventory. The original NWN Official Campaign was created over a year before Shadows of Undrentide and therefore doesn't have this support.

1.37: Invalid Pointer Operation when launching Neverwinter Nights from the launcher (Back to Top)

With version 1.30 of Neverwinter Nights or Shadows of Undrentide, you may see an Invalid Pointer Operation error message when trying to start the game from the launcher. In this case, run nwmain.exe or nwtoolset.exe directly from the directory that you installed the game to. To run the DM Client, you will need to create a shortcut to nwmain.exe and add the parameter -dmc. This does not affect everyone. To fix the problem, you can download the 1.30 "Invalid Pointer Operation" Beta Fix from the Misc Beta Patch section. This fix will be in version 1.31.

1.38: Error updating to version 1.30 with message about needing a new resource build (Back to Top)

To update to Neverwinter Nights 1.30, you require version 1.18 of the NWUPDATE program. This should occur automatically, but in the case that it does not, you can download the latest version of NWUPDATE at this page:

http://nwn.bioware.com/support/patch_manual.html

1.39: Trouble playing multiplayer with multiple computers behind a firewall (Back to Top)

If you have multiple computers behind a firewall and you want to play multiplayer with 2 or more of them at the same time, you must ensure the Client Port setting for each computer is set to a different value. You will find this entry in the file nwnplayer.ini Simply double click on it to open it, and look for the Client Port= line in the [Profile] section. Change this from the default value of 5120 on each machine. You have to stay in a certain range, so use numbers like 5121, 5122, 5123, etc.

1.40: I lost my CD Key. What do I do? (Back to Top)

http://nwn.bioware.com/support/techfaq.html#08

1.41: [HotU only] Creating a new module with the first area using the Beholder Caves tileset causes the start location to be invalid (Back to Top)

If you create a new module and make the first area using the Beholder Caves tileset, the module's starting location will be invalid and inside a wall. You must paint some terrain first and place the module's Starting Location on a valid, walkable spot before you save and play your module.

Most tilesets start out with a start location that is automatically placed. The Beholder Caves tileset does not do this so you must place the start location yourself.

1.42: I'm having trouble deciphering my CD-Key for Neverwinter Nights or an expansion, what can I do? (Back to Top)

A's and R's look very similar but can be distinguished as follows:
An "R" will have sharper angles and straight lines, specifically on the top of the letter. An "A" will have a slight curvature or appear rounded at the top.

Other problem Characters:
U looks like V
M looks like N
G looks like 6
Z looks like 7

Also, sometimes "L" and "1" look the same.

Official CD-Keys do not have the characters "1" (one), “I” (eye), “O” (oh), or “0” (zero).

Atari Support Entry for this matter: Atari Support Entry

1.43: There is a known issue with the Neverwinter Nights v1.65 patch. In Chapter 2 of the "Shadows of Undrentide" Official Campaign the game slows down and becomes unplayable. (Back to Top)

This issue has been resolved as of the 1.66 patch. Updating your game to the latest version will apply the required fix.

1.44: I have forgotten my Neverwinter Nights Multiplayer Username or password! What can I do? (Back to Top)

Remember that usernames and passwords are CaSe SeNsItIvE. Ensure that the caps lock key is not active and that you have the correct case for your password and username.

Go to this page: http://nwn.bioware.com/login/retrieve.html Enter your email address and either your password or username, if you do not have at least part of the required data, account retrieval will be impossible.

If successful your account information will be emailed to the address entered.

1.45: [HotU only] There is a known issue with ATI Cards and the "Isle of the Maker" area in chapter 2.3 of "Hordes of the Underdark". (Back to Top)

ATI users may experience random crashes when loading or playing this area. To fix this issue it is recommended that ATI users uncheck "Enable Shiny Water" found under "Advanced Video Options".

For more information regarding ATI video cards check this entry in the Neverwinter Nights Technical FAQ:

http://nwn.bioware.com/support/techfaq.html#11

1.46: I have installed "Neverwinter Nights Platinum Edition" without uninstalling my existing version of "Neverwinter Nights" and now I'm having performance issues. (Back to Top)

If you do not completely uninstall your previous version of NWN (and delete any remaining folders) before you install NWN Platinum you will experience a wide spectrum of anomalous behavior.

The game resources for NWN Platinum and previous versions are very similar, but will cause issues if they share the same install directory.

If you would like to continue your saved games and characters in platinum, ensure you back up your "saves" and "localvault" folders to a location outside of the NWN install directory. When you have installed Platinum move their contents into their newly created respective folders.

1.47: Multiplayer Error Message: "Connection failed, try another nick." (Back to Top)

The multiplayer component of Neverwinter Nights is powered by GameSpy. Gamespy has a “Chat” system that uses components of the IRC protocol (Internet Relay Chat).

Users with firewall/virus scan software installed (McAfee Antivirus, Norton Firewall, Zone Alarm etc.) Need to ensure that this software is properly configured as follows:

Disable any virus scan/firewall features that will prevent “nwnmain.exe” from using IRC communication (There may be an “Exclude Process” list that “nwnmain.exe “ can be added to, or you may have to manually configure the ports used.)

If the particular setup you are running does not have an “Exclude Process” feature ensure that your firewall, router or NAT is properly configured, with the required ports for NWN multiplayer open. Please see this FAQ entry for more information: http://nwn.bioware.com/support/techfaq.html#03

A note to users behind a university/campus firewall:
Many university/campus firewalls block the ports required for IRC due to security concerns. Users behind a firewall with these security measures in place will receive the “Connection failed, try another Nick.” message when attempting to connect to NWN Multiplayer. These users can still make use of the “Direct Connect” option in Neverwinter Nights Multiplayer. (Manually entering a NWN servers I.P. address)

1.48: ATI Catalyst 5.10 Drivers - ATI 9600SE crashes/missing features when running Neverwinter Nights v1.66 (Back to Top)

This issue has been resolved by ATI in their Catalyst 5.11 driver release.

In game crashes or “features of the game being missing” have been reported when running the ATI Catalyst 5.10 drivers, Windows XP, and Neverwinter Nights 1.66 with the Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark expansion packs installed.

Users are advised to disable shiny water in Neverwinter Nights.

ATI has advised their engineering group and they will publish updates when they become available.

The ATI knowledge base has an entry explaining the situation further:
ATI Knowledge Base entry 737-20792

1.49: Issues with Neverwinter Nights Diamond and the in-game updater. (Solution to the Chapter2E.nwm patch issue.) (Back to Top)

There is a known issue that occurs when a user has a fresh installation of NWN Diamond and then attempts to patch their game using the in-game updater nwnupdate.exe

A different version of the file "Chapter2E.nwm" shipped with NWN Diamond Edition and will cause an error when you attempt to patch from a FRESH install of NWN Diamond. Unfortunately, this error will prevent you from being able to apply the patch. However, there is a critical rebuild included ON the NWN Diamond installation disk that does two things: 1.) Remove the CD Check that was included with NWN Diamond. 2.) Repair the file in question so you can run the auto-patcher without issues.

Users with Diamond Edition who have not yet run a critical rebuild on their installation need to back up their custom content (just in case), run the 1.66 critical rebuild off the Diamond installation disk (or they could simply download the latest critical rebuild from: Here and then patch as normal. If patching from the installation disk the file to look for look for is NWNEnglish1.66HotUUpdate.exe and should it be on the root of the disk.

1.50: Neverwinter Nights and Dual-Core CPUs. (A must read for Dual-Core CPU owners) (Back to Top)

From the 1.67 patch release notes: Added a new option to the nwnplayer.ini file under [Game Options]. "Client CPU Affinity" (for Windows only). If you have more than one CPU on your PC, then you can use this setting to make the game run on only one of the CPUs by specifying the number of the CPU (0-31). Setting "Client CPU Affinity=-1" will turn off CPU affinity.

Using CPU Affinity:
“Client CPU Affinity=-1” should be at the bottom of the [Game Options] section. If it is not, just copy and paste it. By default it is not enabled. Dual-core CPU users need to change “Client CPU Affinity=-1” to “Client CPU Affinity=1”. This will disable one of your CPUs and allow the game to run properly on Dual-Core CPU systems.

1.51: Neverwinter Nights Windows Vista compatibility issues. (All releases) (Back to Top)

Neverwinter Nights is not officially supported when run under Windows Vista. All versions of Neverwinter Nights up to v1.68 are not compatible with Windows Vista and have been blocked from installation by the operating system. If you are having difficulty running Neverwinter Nights on Windows Vista ensure that the game has been updated to the latest version and that you are running the game as an administrator.

1.52: White or Metallic textures when using an Intel 945 graphics chipset. (Back to Top)

To correct the problem:
  1. Right-Click on your desktop
  2. Choose "Graphics Settings"
  3. Once in the OpenGL configuration page go to "3D Settings".
  4. Switch "Force S3TC Texture Compression" to "On".
The issue should be resolved.

1.53: Neverwinter Nights "Heroes" Edition" - Game fails CD Check (Austrailia Only) (Back to Top)

Unfortunately the game shipped as version 1.10 and as such will need to be patched to version 1.68 or later to resolve this issue. Patch the game using the in-game "Update" function or by downloading the relevant critical rebuild from here.

1.54: Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition "Identical CD-keys". (Back to Top)

A very small portion of the latest run of NWN Diamond edition was manufactured incorrectly. Atari erroneously included 3 identical CD-keys with the package and as such it will not install or play.

Customers affected by this issue will see three identical Cd-keys printed on the inside front cover of their game manual and after installing the game they will be prompted to re-enter their Cd-key whenever the game is run. The Cd-keys will be rejected as either "in-use" or "invalid" as Neverwinter Nights does not allow installation to contain the duplicate CD-keys.

Affected customers are best served by contacting Atari Customer Support at http://www.atarisupport.com (North America Only). These customers can expect a quicker resolution if they are able to provide Atari Support with a scan or digital image of the incorrectly printed Cd-keys in their Neverwinter Nights Diamond game manual. This scan will not be required during the initial contact.

Affected users can also contact Atari Support directly.

International customers with internet access can find the correct Atari Support site/hotline in either their game manual or via this page on the BioWare Community Site: http://nwn.bioware.com/support/
