This underground fortress - Undermountain - was created by the vastly powerful mage Halaster. Great Halaster is mad; his mind a dark unfathomable labyrinth reflected by the catacombs of Undermountain that move and shift to accommodate his twisted whims. Despite this, the citizens of Waterdeep went about their lives in peace with little more than whispers of something nefarious lurking below their feet... until now. The city has been thrown into panic with recent attacks from creatures that seem to spring from the darkest bowels of the earth. Along with these foul monsters come Drow Elves with skin as black as shadow. They slip among the screaming and burning chaos of the city to slay prominent citizens. After the initial shock, the rulers of Waterdeep have begun to call for help. Your skills and abilities may be required to aid the city and so you make your way to the famed Yawning Portal Inn to seek the proprietor Durnan. Getting StartedBefore beginning the epic journey, you must carefully consider what sort of character you wish to craft. Hordes of the Underdark is recommended for characters of 12th to 15th level. If you create your character from scratch you will be given a choice of letting the computer level you up to 15th or you will have to manually go through each ‘level-up’ yourself. If you are using a character that has adventured through Neverwinter Nights or Shadows of Undrentide this process is as simple as selecting your pre-generated character. Since the process of manually selecting your feats, skills and so on takes some time be certain about what you want when you reach level 15. For example, if you wanted a Fighter to learn the Weapon Master Prestige class, you must have at least 13 Intelligence to take one of the prerequisites (the feat Expertise) in order to qualify. If some points are not put into Intelligence at the start then it would be difficult to attain it later. You also do not want to run into a situation where you are ‘wasting’ levels, skill points, feats, and the like, in an effort to attain a prerequisite after you have crafted 11 levels of a character.
