Hordes of the Underdark Introductory Walkthrough Go to Page (Previous Page - Index, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 - Next Page) Two Ways to the Second LevelA short distance further into the dungeon you will see a brilliant light show in the form of 12 colored pillars that seem to be blocking your path to a door. This door leads down to the second level of Undermountain. You will also notice four levers in front of these. The Southern most lever is associated with the first row you have access to (green, yellow and red). The next lever over controls the row behind this first row (red, blue, white) and so on. The levers do not work without special rods that you will find scattered throughout the first level of Undermountain. Some are mentioned in this walkthrough, but not all. You will probably run across enough in your exploration of this level to get past the colored pillars without too much trouble. When you have a selection of rods, return to the levers and use them to open a path to the gateway to the second Undermountain level. For example, if you found a Red Rod, insert it into the Southern most lever because it controls the first row. By pulling this lever the red colored column in the first row would sink into the ground allowing you to walk over it. You must clear a path through these colored columns to gain access to the second level. By looking at the chart of colored columns, you can figure out the best way to use the rods to lower the columns. The second way to gain access to the second level is to destroy a collection of debris that is blocking your path in the Ogre Mage lair in the northwest corner of Undermountain - North (see Undermountain - North, Ogre Mage). In the South East corner of the dungeon is an immense Blue Dragon that will not attack unless you trigger one of the many, many traps on the floor. When you enter the room, take a moment to see if you can detect the traps. The dragon is very powerful so be prepared for a fight. The door will lock you in once the trap is triggered so you will be unable to flee home to momma. If you overcome the dragon you will gain access to a small room containing Halaster’s Magnifying Glass and a Blue Rod. Halaster’s Magnifying Glass can be used against the Formians you encounter on the third level, and it will help solve a special puzzle near the Beholder bridge later in the game.... Ogres vs. FairiesIf you talked to Grovel, the cowardly goblin you discovered, there seems to be a war going on between an Ogre High Mage and the Fairy Queen. You will stumble across many battles being waged between the two factions.
