Undermountain - North

Map of Undermountain - North

A - The Maze
B - Lair of the Ogre High Mage
C - Red Rod, Harp of Haunting
D - White Rod
E - Encounter with Greater Mummy
F - Gloves of the Hin Fist +5
G - Green Rod (on body)
H - Pile of Debris (gate to second level)

The Maze

Entering the northern area of the Undermountain through the western most door you will see a large open room. Wait a moment before continuing, as the floor is one giant trap except for a small walkway that winds around the room. If you have a high enough skill you should be able to pick a path through the traps. Every time you step out of this path you will be blasted with magical missiles. It is best to leave any henchmen at the door or they will suffer a great deal of damage. A pair of Drow archers will fire at you while you are attempting to get past the traps.

Player Tip

If running through twisting, turning paths being peppered by archers is not your thing, you can also destroy the pillars to deactivate the maze.

Upon reaching the northern most part of this room you will see two switches that disable the floor traps and allow you to move around much easier.

The Lair of the Mummy

Not much to say here that you can’t guess: if you mess with the sarcophagus at the top of the stairs be prepared to fight a mummy who is rather touchy about his sleeping arrangements. You will be able to find the Greater Amulet of Health within the sarcophagus once the evilness has been defeated.

The Ogre Mage

Ogre Mage

The Ogre Mage will cast a variety of spells (including Invisibility) to attempt to smite you after entering the room. In addition to these spells, the Ogre Mage has a group of bodyguards around. Be prepared for a fight and use any anti-magic or protection items or spells you might have. If you manage to do enough damage to him, he will surrender and declare you the victor. He shows remarkable intelligence and plays the brute only because it is expected of him. His name is Olgin Hasterean and hails from the Turmish Mountains. Olgin was snatched away from his tribe by Halaster and has been here ever since. He cannot give you much information on where Halaster might be now but he does know a way to the second floor of this dungeon. This way was blocked by a recent cave-in and the only thing that will get you past this is blasting the debris away with explosives. These explosives can be found in the lair of the Fairy Queen (see Undermountain - South).

Player Tip

You can always choose to slay Olgin when you grow tired of him talking.
